ITT we talk about literary characters everybody hates but you feel sorry for.

Me, I thin Holden fits the bill, pic related.

Didn't he have really short hair in the book or am I misremembering this?

Didn't notice that detail and I'm half done with it.

fujo...

Wat. Are you trying to tell something or just banging your head on the keys

How can you hate Holden? Yeah he's immature and obnoxious at times, but he's so clearly lost and depressed that I don't see how you can't feel for him.

Look up the book's goodreads page. The readers are the exact sort of people Holden shits on. People don't like being showered with truth, so they just bash him and say he's whiny or something. Others just say he's rich and spoiled or that he's what's wrong with America nowadays.

I think he's mostly hated by teenagers who are embarrassed to see themselves in him.

Teenagers who actually do appreciate the read. It kind of becomes a gospel to them. But people who fail to relate to him fail to understand it in the first place.

>tfw you're still Holden at age 20 and have no idea how to mature

Why does he smokes in every goddamn picture?

Go live in the boonies.
Mature.

To help people distinguish him? He's like 17 and smoking in the 50s.

He's constantly smoking in the novel, to the point where his aerobic capacity is that of an old man.

I don't dislike him for what I see of myself in him. I dislike him for what I see of him in the people I dislike. I see people like him as pathetic and annoying, so a well written case study in how they think is more grating than interesting.
It doesn't help that the internet provides us with about a thousand self-aggrandizing people just like him on a daily basis.

Tom. He's basically me but I became optimistic about life rather than killing myself ;_;

Ewmbehr Ewmbehr. Works in olfactory enchantments, dabbles in other sorts of lures, too.

I think it's tough for younger people to relate these days. Holden doesn't have the proper cultural capital to justify complaining about anything. Because of that, relating to him makes them uncomfortable.

>People don't like being showered with truth
Hello Holden

He certainly does, otherwise he wouldn't even try to engage in conversations. He's just heavily misunderstood by everyone and is constantly seeking attention, to the point of lying all the time.
