Kill All Normies: Online Culture Wars from Veeky Forums and Tumblr to Trump and the Alt-Right

What does Veeky Forums think about this (and other) books about us?

A kid in my lit class was reading this...disgusting

>disgusting
How so? Veeky Forums gets millions of unique visitors every month. This place doesn't exist in a vacuum and has a significant impact on society. There should be more books about it.

Shitty book, might as well read a wikipedia page.

I think he means it's digusting in the same manner that reading Russell's history of philosophy is.

jacobinmag.com/2017/02/paleocons-for-porn

Just read this, the author condensed the whole book into a little short form article. We all are aware of what it is saying.

>non-male author
>click-bait title

Do not want.

Also

>us

/pol/ is not Veeky Forums no matter how hard they try.

t. /int/ and Veeky Forums

>in different ways, they all seek to reassert the power of some combination of the last remaining identity group yet to be admitted to the identity politics tent — white heterosexual men.

This seems both ironically funny and obnoxious. It more or less legitimizes /pol/'s thesis (or rather, what thesis they adapted from others) that white men are disenfranchised and must seek the refuge of [Kek/the internet/porn/white supremacy/hitler-chan/etc] in order to find their place in the world again. She is literally claiming white men actually don't have a place in the world. How truthful has this statement become years after she published this book? Does this not create even more animosity? I bet she was heavily criticized by liberals for pulling this off.

This implies that "place in the world" only exists if you fit into a notch on an identitarian's belt in social media. Coming from someone in flyover land, this is not true

The book's argument rests on two retarded assumptions, that "frree kekistan u triggered feminazi" redditors represent Veeky Forums, and that the new wave of reactionary right wing groups exist for the sole purpose of trolling people
I give her props for at least trying to do research, but it seems like she has a fundamental misunderstanding of how humor and culture work in a place like this, she assumes every "kys faggot" is to be taken as a grim display of homophobic white men cyberbullying others.

>she assumes every "kys faggot" is to be taken as a grim display of homophobic white men cyberbullying others.
I think her point is that it's the inevitable conclusion in a society where saying such a thing gets your branded a heretic. Most people who went down the path of /pol/ started saying that shit as a joke on /b/ and then radicalized when they were told they can't even joke about it anymore.
>t. old/pol/

redpill me on this book.

Now that you wrote this, her assumptions make even less sense. I have done the same mistake she made with my post, only I'm an anonymous Veeky Forums user who wrote on a whim and she presumably spent quite some time doing research and proof-reading that shit

Undergrad tier treatise on the "alt-right" that prides itself on moving past the exploding van Veeky Forums hysteria... then promptly becomes hysterical and rambles about gamergate and Milo Yianopolous

>t. /int/ and Veeky Forums
You could've just written "I'm a big faggot". Much clearer.

So why hasn't someone from Veeky Forums (or Veeky Forums collectively) written the definitive Veeky Forums analysis yet?

Because Veeky Forums is too ephemeral to be properly analyzed. Veeky Forums of March 2018 is not at all like 2010 and even less like 2003.

Of course I haven't and won't read it, but there's nothing particularly special about the average opinion of /pol/ or /b/ or Veeky Forums in general. They spout much of the same shit my uncle used to say at the dinner table 15 years ago, like commenting on how black people smell bad, are dumb, fags are sick and disgusting, and so forth. A lot of people have these thoughts, but now you can't share them anywhere, not between family, not between friends (especially since now they communicate through social media, everything you say is stored and can be screencapped and used against you), only way people can express it is anonymously on the internet.

You don't have to analyze it as a monolith, you can analyze the various periods, how it's changed ect

You now remember /pol/ campaigning for Ron Paul and "it's happening" memes.

>he thinks Veeky Forums or even /pol/ is white

There’s that history of Veeky Forums document. The effects of anonymity are well known; there’s not much to analyze imo. It’s just a place free of social pressures, judgement, and repercussions with a young user base.

but we have mods and jannies and rules

everyone who tries to analyse anything through Veeky Forums is braindead and should hang himself

with enough people you could transform pol into any wing you want, even chicken wing, just spam pics of MLK

>chan
Imageboard.
>Nihilistically reveling in shock, transgression, and trolling, you’re more likely to find these young men posting diaper porn, My Little Pony hate, and swastika-laden Pepe memes than listening to Wagner
But I watched Die Rheingold this morning and I'm reading the libretto of Die Walküre right now.
>But this temporary alliance of very different factions — the most stark being between the traditionalist right and the libertinism of chan culture — has produced a schizophrenic incoherence.
woman_confused_by_political_opportunism_with_multiple_question_marks_over_her_head.jpg
>the philosophical irreconcilability between its paleo-conservatism, which aims for a return to traditional marriage while disapproving of porn and promiscuity, and the amoral libertine Internet culture from which all the real energy has emerged
Or maybe they behave like the obscene nuns in Žižek's Pervert's Guide to Ideology, citing the film The Sound of Music IIRC (and millennia of Catholicism). The quest would be to monopolize both sides of the discourse, and accuse the milquetoast, centrist, self-proclaimed "left" of both being faggots as per centuries of conservatism on one hand, and of being not faggots enough, with the more recent appropriation of that transgression Nagle can't stop having nightmares about, on the other.
But why would Nagle act like this is the first time in history where a celibate white man sees no contradiction between ye olden family values and violating little boys? Why? How little is her political acumen! Before talking about what can or cannot reconciled, I would first think of the religious right, that one political group who sees forgiveness and reconciliation as a feature and not a defect.
As her idol Fisher wrote in that Vampire Castle article:
>The bourgeois-identitarian left knows how to propagate guilt and conduct a witch hunt, but it doesn’t know how to make converts.
The watered-down, Rowlingian "Christianity" of this sorry excuse of a "left" isn't complete yet: beyond Gramsci and Laclau's hegemony, Alinsky's ogranizing, the cult of guilt, and public witch burning, al of which got them in the same position as where temple-smashing Christians went in the former land of the pagans, the libs now have to discover conversion and forgiveness, in order to fulfill they destiny, and become at last the very bigotry they claimed they were fighting.

wasn't Wagner the flagship of the nazis though

Holy Christ - Not this shit again. Can't we let this dead horse die in peace?

When I think of a flagship for a political organization operating in a country full of antisemites, the story of which begins in 1918, I don't resurrect a mythology-loving neckbeard who died in 1883. I would first look if there are any viable Charlie Chaplin impersonators, with tiny moustache and exaggerated mannerisms.

it is get over it

you are right, I am wrong

wagner was a talentless hack

i think chan is cool because anyone can say whatever he want's. And yes many people in Veeky Forums aren't even rightwing but the majority seems it is. Most kids tired of leftist culture so they counter attack. Generation Z would be by far the most conservative.

if the horse is already dead, what is there to 'let die'?

Stop shilling this book. You faggots are not interesting enough to read a book about.

I was surprised by how ok it actually was. It was obviously rushed to press, several glaring typos in almost every chapter (which is pretty piss poor for a book that only takes 7 hours to finish). The worst was when she claimed Gibbons attributed the fall of the Roman empire to sexual promiscuity and female emancipation (literally the opposite of what he claimed, that it was due to Christianity). Any editor worth his/her salt should have flagged that. It's not an obscure reference by any means.

It kind of just feels like a really long article and not a proper book at some points.

As far as the overall argument goes I think she did an ok job of trying to outline the contours of both the frogtwitter /pol/ edgelord crowd and the tumblr vampire castle crowd. She probably did as good of a job as she could have with the early days of Veeky Forums bit. Anyone who wasn't there couldn't possibly capture the whole thing.
In particular, I think she leans way to hard on the reading of everyone as just reflexively edgy immoralists and misses a few things about the early days. Overall though it's mostly accurate.

The argument really falls apart at the very end when instead of actually tying the picture she was painting the whole time together she get's giga triggered by /r9k/ memes and basically ends on the whole "all these people are just like this because they hate women and are losers" meme, which she had up until that point been doing an OK job of keeping in perspective.

I would recommend it to intelligent people who never spend time on the internet as a primer with the caveat that the last 2 chapters need to be taken with a grain of salt.

>Generation Z would be by far the most conservative.
lolno they are even further left than millennials

[citation needed]

Why doesn't one of us write a piece about the chan culture I mean we are the driving force behind it, well all of us as a group I mean. We need a counter argument to the bullshit that this person is spewing about us.

I took a poll on /leftypol/ and discovered that gen z about 100% communist.

This question was already answered by other anons, sorry for not lurking moar

True, I take back what I said.

We don't need a counter argument, we are the counter argument.

>t. doesnt browse Veeky Forums

>do i fit in yet

Why? Who cares, let them think what they want as long as they don't burn this place down, and even then another Veeky Forums can be made.

>Why don't one of us write a piece about the chan culture so that people can understand it without lurking more?
