He was a monk who didn't like that the catholic church was taking money for cheap salvation, wrote about it and posted it up. Not uncommon for the time but the difference with him is people actually started following it. Thus the protestant reformation and hundreds of years of war was ignited. Massive casualties ensued, but it's mostly peaceful now. He also hated the Jews. Before him all Christendom in Europe was mostly Catholic or eastern orthodox. Now there are hundreds of denominations.
