Also big cities are always more expensive than smaller (rent, necessities), poorer people would be almost always better off in smaller towns surrounding big cities.

I partly agree with you, the cities in the survey aren't too large either. And cities like Berlin, Melbourne and Sydney feel hardly like a metropolis apart from the city centre.

But now imagine you're poor, there is still much more to do that doesn't neccessarily requires an awful lot of money: partying, clubs, sports etc.
