The lyrics are from the chapter about Sirens in James Joyce's Ulysses, based on the sirens in the Greek myth. In the Greek version, the sailors besides Odysseus have their ears plugged to not hear the sirens because if you listen to them you'll want to crash on the rocks they sing from. Odysseus got tied to the mast so he could hear the song but his sailors couldn't hear him begging to be left swim to shore.
