This really makes me sad, the shoes he makes are really well made and he's a nice person, he has talent on shoemaking but it's all a waste because he lacks of originallity and he doesn't have a real image, when I visited his website it looked really bland and generic. Not even mysterious like one of the artisanal brands he's ripping off, what a disappointment.

If each bit of the shoe resembles a different designer how can you make a generalization about the design? Isn't the act of putting together all these various elements with skill also the act of creating something new?

He is self-taught and posted early on in his career on SZ, so obviously he's been influenced by the big artisanal labels. He uses Guidi leather as do most, so no surprises there.

Maybe it's just me but put any of his shoes into a lineup and I could pick them out instantly. I think his style is recognizable enough that I would never mistake his footwear for anyone else's.

I think the reason is just that interest in that darker style of artisanal clothing has already peaked and is waning. So many of the key figures in the movement (Altieri, Poell, Amadei, Horikawa, Zero, Jona, Doma) have started running out of ideas and it's starting to feel stale. Hell, Poell doesn't even produce many new designs anymore.

I respect him as a shoemaker but not as a designer, also it's not that hard to come up with a design like that, anyone with shoemaking skills could come up with shoes like that. His shoes doesn't just resemble other sneakers, they're ripoffs.

I stay with my a1923, I like his unique leather treatments (and not buying already tanned/dyed leather) but this is funny and kind of ironic, a1923's "only" "original" design is now being ripped off hahaha after a1923 heavily basing his designs on other artisanal brands. I just hope this pushed foward a1923 to make a new sneaker design.

For sure. I see what you mean. I really don't know much about his design experience or his philosophy. Perhaps he was just making a design he was familiar with or maybe he just started with shoes he himself would wear. I definitely hope to see him exploring some new ground in the future.

No, he also kinda ripped off ccp (pic related) which are inspired by some army sneakers. Augusta actually improved the design comfort-wise, aesthetics and quality too. Also I think it's ok what Simone did because ccps sneakers were only in one season I think and James is "ripping off" what's already in production. Maybe i'm just biased but Jame's designs remind me of what Zara does to designers, it wouldn't surprise me if i found Jame's sneakers in a Zara store being rip offs of a1923's sneakers.

I don't think artisanal brands (specially ccp) are inetersted in changing their designs every 6 months. Also I don't think they want to keep up with a larger market, they're artisanal brands so they can't mass produce their garments (at least without ruining quality control), many of them are even starting to tell retailers to stop selling online. And some have never been sold online... oh, that reminds me... ccp stopped creating new designs when his right hand left his workshop, ccp's brand came up with his popular designs when that person started working there.

What they produce has little to do with how they produce. Most CCP these days is custom ordered direct from his workshop. My point is just that I haven't seen a groundbreaking design from CCP, Damir Doma, Julius, etc in years. There was a golden age when all these labels were sprouting (around the time Carpe Diem was dissolving) and all these awesome new ideas were appearing on runways. Now those designers have fallen back on their earlier designs, which they release again every year as permanent collection items. That's fine, but there is rarely something new that sets my heart racing like ice crystal bambas or drips did.

I was gonna list CCP as well as Linea, but I couldn't find a pic of those ccp sneaks.
I don't think it's fair to compare Kearns to Zara, especially if you're going to bring a1923 into the mix. I'm not trying to defend intellectual plagiarism, but you can not even remotely say that Simone or Poell came up with what is probably the most classic sneaker design.
