What Playboy had before it absolutely drove it into the ground was a really interesting reputation. Sure, there were nudes, but there were also high-quality articles and the promotion of the bachelor lifestyle in a fun sense. Hell, I have an old Playboy cocktail book from the 60s, and it's high quality as shit. It was about pushing the goddamn boundaries but tastefully, basically making Hustler look like a bunch of knuckle draggers in comparison. Then I guess the 90s and the Internet happened and Playboy went to shit somehow. I honestly don't think it had to do with the nudes alone, though that didn't help.

Playboy went to shit because hefner put his family members in charge of the company instead of handing the reigns to people who were more in tune with the technology being made available as time passed. He also insisted in remaining in the spotlight of the company with his lifestyle, but there comes a time to acknowledge that seeing an 80+ year old guy with multiple 20 year old girls is not that appealing/enticing or marketable.

Look at victoria's secret. They originally bought the company for peanuts and now its a multi billion dollar business. As far as the quality of their textiles and products are concerned, they are average at best and overpriced at the very least, yet victoria's secret focused on the brand and the appeal of it through their marketing division. They started to do something very few fashion brands would be willing to do which was to make the models themselves the stars of the brand rather than the clothes themselves. They latched onto girls like Gisele / Tyra / Klum / Lima / Kerr and made them the stars of the show rather than the designer being the focus. Women became interested in buying their shit because of the models associated with it and men loved that shit because the models were hot as fuck. Playboy should have gone somewhere down that route, but they fucking blew it big time.

Holy shit, that's fascinating analysis and an awesome post. It makes a lot of sense in retrospect - I'd heard rumors that their transition to the Internet was begrudging, now it's kinda making sense.

To be honest, I wish I knew of cool mags, I don't know any specifically.

If I had my way, I'd want something like LEON (leon.jp/) with more nudity. It's playful, the photoshoots are kinda fun (though I suspect most of them are an excuse for Leon to pose with hot women), there's an obvious love for clothing/cars/alcohol/general fuckery, the men involved range the gamut in terms of age so it never skews too much in the "lol fuck old people" or "let's talk retirement funds" directions, etc. There's definitely stuff that could improve it, but yeah.
