The obvious answer is the piano, but could be onto something here. Hurdy-Gurdy's are pretty lovely. The only better I can think of is the wheelharp.

Actually, another option is some sort of long-string instrument like Alvin Lucier's 'Long Thin Wire'. I've heard a couple of shows employing those recently, and they've always been very attractive.

However, the instruments I think look the coolest when played are upright bass, tenor sax and piano.

I really think trumpet is probably the coolest. If you're doing it right it's so expressive and compliments just about anything. It can be moody, funky, lively as all hell. Think Miles Davis, think Dizzy or Louis.

Poetic jazz men are just generally the coolest though.

Though I think slide guitar is pretty up there too. Mandolin if you're accompanied, terrible solo instrument.

Synths are also tight, I just think they're catching a lame rap with all the folks who think they can use them to make cool noises without putting as much discipline and thought into them as other musical endeavors.

Music is just cool man. Play interesting, genuine music on anything and it's cool.
