If hitting a group, have plans to do something with your group of friends first. Then when you approach them and have a quick conversation, finish by telling them about what your doing later. They're new around and probably want to meet new people so they'll probably go. Not only do you get a buffer from awkwardness because a large group pads against awkward silence, but also the possibility to have a wingman/woman workin with you.

Try having something to invite the group to next time, like a party or show your going to with friends.
