and it can be traced to mostly british historical work immediately post ww1 & the various former a-h constituent nations nationalist arguments where anti-habsburg propaganda and justification played a significant part
for the former you have the trio of seton=watson, namier and steed, for the latter you have, well, virtually everything from the czechs, slovaks etc.
(incidentally consider that _even during_ the war, most czechs did _not_ want the empire to fall, they did not want to see it dismantled etc. - as in they wanted to remain part of it [even moreso before the war], and it was the clique around masaryk that pushed events to their real life conclusion)

The entente can forcibly partition an empire however they want, but the empire wouldn't have collapsed if they hadn't

they were not as much partitioned as the minority elements vying for independence won over both internally as well as the support of the victorious powers leading to the collapse of the monarchy
furthermore the constituent lands of the monarchy were still discrete units with their power structures
there were no such elements of note to be found in a (relatively speaking) more uniform germany

there weren't a lot of violent events in AH before ww1. sure, many minorities didn't like it, but this issue was hardly destroying the empire. losing the war did. there was a lot of internal political debate on the minority issue, but it mostly remained just that: debates. contrast that to Russia for example, where they had constant problems with terrorists and rebellions in the Caucasus and Central-Asia.
