The manufacturer says the border and sky need to be the same color. What do you think about the gray lines instead? Doesn't ruin it, do they?

It's not because of a bad manufacturer, it's because of the way embroidery works. Embroidery is most clear when there are threaded shapes on top of the fabric backing (which can only be one color)
If the border and sky were different colors, I'd need to choose to either have a dark gray fabric backing and make the space around the text embroidered with black thread, or have a black backing and embroider the entire background of the scene with gray thread. I'd be choosing between making the text illegible or the scene ugly

Look at one of my first patches, where I didn't take that into account. See how messy the edges of the mosquito are? That's because the gray had to be embroidered

new to patches-- what are the main articles of clothing that work best with patches and are quite easy to pull off without looking like a complete autist

(im v self concious, maybe some type of jacket?)

Denim jackets (especially lightwash) are pretty easy to pull off with patches, so are bombers in neutral colors like black, brown, or navy.
A subtle patch on the shoulder or above the breast pocket would look good without being too flashy.
