Mosaics

Post your favorite mosaics, I love these things.

Include the century they were made too if you'd be so kind. This one's from Pompeii, first century (I think)

thats crazy i never knew the ancients made portraits like this

What products do I need to make a mosaic?

Small pieces of multicolored tile
Glue
A surface to glue on
artistic ability

this is incredible

why do some of the tiles fade over time, like the top right corner in the OP? exposure to the elements?

The tiles aren't faded, they're not there at all. Damage to the mosaic.

Op, are you that guy who is sexually aroused by tiles?

That's just damage over time. Those tiles have fallen off. Nowadays with varnished tile you don't need to worry about fading. If you make a mosaic it should last a very long time in proper conditions.

great thread, op. enjoyed the f outta it so far.

Really enjoyed the thread. You made me discovered incredible things. Thanks!

something eerie about this picture. i think its the fact that images of women in a secular setting in what looks like basically two piece bathing suits would not appear in western art like this until our own times. I wonder how many images the romans had like this that christfags destroyed (on the assumption that this wasn't some anomalous picture for a rich guy).

whoever took that photo deserves a bullet.

The chick jogging with the dumbbells and the girls playing volleyball were what did it for me

Was it autism?
And with that question I do not mean to demean persons with autism. Autism has been shown to result into marvelous creativity before.

neat, looks almost like enamel

I don't imagine it's any more labor-intensive than marble sculpture, but I could be wrong

Autism is a spook

I found most of these mosaics through art history and archaeology blogs then googled higher res pics of them.

gentlemen, this thread is fantastic. You just reminded me an amazing trip to Ravenna. Does anybody have some hr pics of the inside of basilica?

Is it you floor tiles guy?
This thread is too dangerous for you, you may die from a stroke or priapism

renaissance mostly applied to sculpture and painting though. I just didn't know how extensive and skilled roman mosaic was before

nice to see you again, tileman

pretty good animals compared to the guesswork of later centuries. how would they have seen a tiger?

They had zoos back in the day, you know.

they would have been menageries but i'm wondering where they would get tigers from

Probably the ocean. Tigers are known ocean fauna.

I like it. Bump.

A possiblity is that tigers used to be more widespread. See Caspian tiger.

oh ok
how am I wrong though?

Aion, god of time, pictured standing in a zodiac möbius. 3rd century.

I saw this in Ravenna. It was completely free, and breathtaking. Yet it's one of the smaller mosaics there.

Ravenna truly is an unsung gem of a place. 8 UNESCO world heritage sites, and you could see them in a day.

Why has no one posted the floor of Otranto cathedral yet?

please post it yourself, I've posted all but 5 ITT so some contributions (especially medieval ones) would be appreciated.
