My hair is thick and curlyish, and I have an undercut with the top pretty long (it can reach over my nose if I stretch it out). I'm getting a haircut on Tuesday. How should I get it cut if I want to start growing it out? Is there a way to keep the top growth or will it be uneven lengths?

My hair routine is shampoo every second or third day depending on how dirty/oily your hair gets. Condition your ends every time you bathe or shower. Argan or Coconut oil hair mask once a week, I just do mine every Sunday to make it easy. Homemade sea salt spray (salt, water, & coconut oil) if you need texture or volume.

Well what do you want to grow it out into? That decides how you should get it cut.
You probably should just get the top cut to allow the sides to catch up and blend in. Or if you want to keep the top length then just wait and let the sides grow out while getting a slight touch up on top periodically. That's what I've been doing, same situation.
Hair doesn't grow back thicker. But I have a similar problem from my Mediterranean ancestors. What I do is use clippers to keep body hair to an appropriate length. Below the knee gets a 3, above the knee legs and forearms are a two, upper arms and crotch get a one. Have fun. Whole process takes about an hour every two weeks.
Volume is an easy fix with a blowdrier and product. I've been a big fan of shorter undercuts recently. You could try pic related. Ronaldo always has the same cut but can style it a million ways depending on the occasion.

I've been wearing the slicked back, shaved sides thing for a couple of years now. Getting really bored with it. I'm looking for a similar style but growing the sides out a bit and not having the top so long as I'm fed up of the slick look. Problem is, my hair is really straight and fine and when I try a rougher swept back look, it just falls apart even with copious amounts of product and spray.
