Oh yeah, I rarely ever see it outside either, but whenever I see it posted online, or at a convention or something it gets my blood boiling. It's always the same stupid memes too like "HENTAI 69" or "SENPAI" or "WAIFU" or something else fake and gay with random katakana/kanji on the back and some generic moe girl vector ripped from deviantart on the front. It's always either that or ugly omocat and co. edgy-kawaii Porter Robinson dickriding uniforms. Fucktoy "streetwear" in general is so boring and beaten to death now but when combined with gay weeb shit it's like maximum headass synergy. I'm actually amazed that some people actually think these tired memes are funny and interesting and would be a good look. Embarrassing.

Because it isn't done sincerely. As far as I can tell the whole schtick of it is that it's something nerdy and uncool repurposed into something "cool" because it's worn facetiously, like "ugly sweaters." Like wearing a "no waifu no laifu" shirt while walking around with your girlfriend; it's "cool" because it's a joke and he isn't serious about it.

People always fall back on something like this when I try to explain it. It's a needless truism to say people are free to wear fake and gay clothing, but I am also free to not like that. It would be swell if I could turn off my emotional responses, but that's just how I feel when I see it. I think it's played out, tacky, gimmicky, incredibly derivative and appropriative (e.g., OG artists/creators don't get a cut/probably aren't even contacted, relies on existing content vs original content), and in some cases, it involves art theft. It feels disingenuous and opportunistic on the side of the brands, and it reeks of ignorance on the side of the "fans." I think it's pretty scummy to use another person's work (esp. without asking) to boost your own brand and image. I don't like a lot of streetwear (Supreme) for this reason, but at least they'll do official collabs and stuff; I can't say the same for most of these "anime swag" brands.

I feel strongly because I care strongly about my hobbies. If it didn't involve them then I wouldn't give a shit. I think you're oversimplifying or even in denial if you think there's no irony involved in that HENTAI 69 shirt and WEEABOO MOTHERFUCKER jacket. You should know the fuccboi stereotype; it's all about image. It's subculture signaling in an effort to appear unique but ironically ends up making all these people look the same. It's like the worst of both worlds (fashion x weeb). The people who are "into" it all look like cunts and tourists. I think more than anything else, it's the general shallowness of it that really gets to me.

Radio Eva has a lot of apparel and it looks damn nice too but it's a little pricey. I used to have that exact shirt actually along with the Ore no T-shirt one from Arakawa Under the Bridge, but nowadays I'm not into the "powerlevel hiding" thing because it feels like it's being obscure/obtuse for the sake of being obscure/obtuse. Kind of as if its entire purpose is just to have a person recognize it and go "hey I know that thing" and then you maybe chat awkwardly for a sec and then never see each other again. Now I think hell, wear it loud and proud like a band shirt. Or just wear it at home if it's particularly loud. Do you not know what "irony" means or something? One of the big brands that sells those meme hats is called "Anime Trash Swag." The "trash" part of that is being ironically self-deprecating. While I'm sure some people will wear that with 100% sincerity, a lot of them wear it half-jokingly. Same with the loud eromanga shirts or those NWA x anime girl shirts or PAOM shirts with tumblr-core "vaporwave" lean x moe girls (XD). You're saying it's like an "inside joke" and that's at least partly what I'm talking about. It's that facetious half-joking (i.e., ironic) mode of wearing it that makes it "cool" and socially acceptable rather than embarrassing and weird. Also why are you getting so hung up on semantics here.

Genuinely BTFO. I'm with you and I respect your passion. I can't relate to most in this thread because I think this stuff is the definition of cringe. However, I do own some clothing that I would say I wear not necessarily ironically but "post-ironically" (ie with a mixture of irony and sincerity, mostly sincerity in my case). For example, I like to wear hawaiian shirts. I'm fully aware that they are "tacky" and I'm not wearing them completely unironically in the same way a 50 year old dad would. However, I genuinely like them and think they look cool. I would guess that there are many folks in this thread who feel this way about anime clothing or so-called "ironic" anime clothing. How do you feel about it when looked at in this way? Of course, your point about being cancerous to fashion and not compensating artists still stands 100%.
