Slavery was dreadful, but I find it quite strange that the descendants of those who profited from it at the time ( the Africans who weren't enslaved/did the slaving) are now materially worse off than the descendants of those who were enslaved. Slavery benefitted some people who were of subsaharan African origin ( but not those who were enslaved at the time) but in the long run its no way to run an economy.

The Confederate government had a secret police service, a larger bureaucracy, higher taxes, a harsh conscription on the regular populace.

I'm sure the cotton barons felt dandy about it though, as they were exempt from service if they had 30 slaves.

The Confederacy wasn't "more free", it's entire purpose was slavery, and protecting slave owners from "tyranny" was more important to them than their own ordinary citizens.
