We've talked about it and came to this conclusion. It is a mental illness, it's defined as such. It has ill mental effects, and not in the 'trans people are crazy lunatics' way. Not being happy with the gender you are causes dysphoria which leads to depression, suicidal tendencies, withdrawal from social situations, etc. What do we do with mental disorders? We treat them and minimize symptoms. For a trans person that would be transitioning/hormones and maybe sexual reassignment surgery if they want to go that far. A lot of people who throw out there that it's a mental disorder say it in a way that implies that if they just stopped wanting to be the other gender they'd be normal, and they're crazy for wanting to be. If you want to consider it as such, understand that this would exacerbate the symptoms and know that treating the symptoms is the only way to fix the issue, and in this case you do that by trying to become the gender you wanted to be.

I'm not out to piss people off but I firmly believe that the words male and female - and their derivatives man and woman - refer explicitly to the sex. That is, "female" being the descriptor for organisms that produce the ova sex gametes and "male" referring to those which produce sperm. The concept of each sex appearing and acting a certain way may be an entirely cultural thing, but what they actually ARE is not.

A man might have the desire to wear what are traditionally women's clothes, or act in other ways that are commonly considered feminine, and he has every right to do so if he wants. He might even feel depressed or suicidal if he doesn't do that, and he might feel that doing those things is just right for him.

But a man is a male human, and a male is the sex that produces sperm and does not produce ova. If he's still freeing the tadpoles whenever he has an orgasm, he is still a man by definition.

For me it is not an issue of feelings either way. I am annoyed when someone refers to themselves as the incorrect sex not because I give a shit if they like to wear pretty dresses and makeup, but because they're literally using words wrong.

different person here. I used to be pretty dismissive of trans people too and I still think that the trans rights movement has some areas that are batshit fucking crazy. However if you really get down to it, the issue is basically what you consider a 'person'. We know that sex is a combination of things, chromosomes, external genitalia, internal genitalia, and the influence of sex hormones on the brain to create a sexed brain (know as your gender). We know that there are cases where these things don't match up and often these people will be intersex, this is easily observable so there's not much controversy around whether these people have a legitimate issue. When you develop a self perception in the opposite sex category of all the other aspects of your biological sex then you're trans. If this happens to a person you have a choice which part of them you view as legitimate, their body or their mind. In my opinion when we interact with someone we interact with their mind, the body is simply a means for the mind to exist and project itself into the world. I'd say broadly speaking the description of a trans person as 'trapped in the wrong body' is accurate.
