You could always translate it over to a thicker style like traditional. I'm sure it wouldn't be very difficult.

What is this style called?

I believe it is Neo-Traditional. The only difference between neo and regular traditional is colour pallets and imagery if I recall.

...

Is there anything cool from berserks manga that I could get tatted without looking like a huge weeb? By far my favorite manga/story and I’d love to a tattoo based off of it

Definitely. There is plenty of stuff from berserk that won't come off as weeb even by people who don't know what it is. You could see as an example.

Pic related is an example of poor placement (imo) but it was translated really well. This is just an example to show Miura's work can be translated.

I'd probably get a behelit but incorporated into something else. Anything but the branded symbol or Guts walking away from Griffith.

You've got alot to work with, don't be boring.

You're right, it's neo-traditional, but there's a bit more to it, like stylistic choices, like the gloss on the bottle (more emphasis on shadows, more refining/details in the designs, the perspective doesn't change). Color palette has gained more variation - there is still artists that do neo-traditionals that are chock full of bright colors, but there's also lots that do black and grey and, more recently, single color (black and grey with, for example, red).

Thanks for the explanation. Wasn't too sure of the response.

Don't really like how the skull was done but you can see how much you can translate the work.

I was thinking something more minimal

is this too quirky for Veeky Forums?

Tattoo artist here, feel free to ask me any questions, I'll be here a couple of hours.

I see a lot of misinformed people in these threads, hopefully I can help. Nothing beats doing your own research and having your own original ideas, but try to follow your artist's advice.

(Tattoo artist as in professional tattoo artist working in a studio with daily customers, not a beginner who tattoos for fun in a kitchen).

Pic isn't my work, but something neat, since I don't want to post my Insta on Veeky Forums.

Haha. These are all I got for Berserk inspo. Best of just bringing some stuff to your artist.

Looks like It's just bad amigo. Ironically bad tattoos are still bad imo.

Shame about the insta but I've got a question.

Are you skeptical about people who bring in non-tattoo related art as reference claiming it's theirs? Like, are you concerned you may accidentally copy somebody's elses work?

Also, do you have a specific style or concept you like to work with?

I kinda like that.

I don;t see the problem with posting your own insta.

Can you post more tattoo inspiration

thinking about getting a gilapple

That's so cool. I'm so anxious about my eel appointment. First time I've given an artist free reign.

Is that by Gakkin too?

99/100 times it's obvious when the artwork belongs to a client or not.

If it doesn't, then depending on the subject I will either use it (examples: classical art, common symbols, video game subjects, etc) or I'll find something similar or design it myself in Photoshop (examples of stuff I wouldn't do exactly as presented: flash or tattoos from another artist, art or drawings from a currently active artist). For serious projects I would take someone's idea and present them with something I want to do / will do a good job of.

I'm sure its happened more than once, and most people don't understand or care enough about this. Sometimes it's just easier to just print out a celebrity's tattoo or the first image result for "infinity symbol family" since these kind of jobs do nothing for my portfolio nor would I ever post them on Instagram, but at the end of the month they pay the bills and literally no one cares.

>Also, do you have a specific style or concept you like to work with?

Every decent artist does. Most still do work they're not interested in. The more talented and popular artists are lucky to only work within their style. Some artists are "4x4", of which some are great and others are terrible.

In my case, this lately, I like only working with black and ideas that are simple, bold and look good from far away without being too cliche traditional (see pic related). It's a bit of a meme trendy style so I'm still trying to evolve and develop my own stuff. For now, I'm forced to do a bit of everything.

Sorry if this was long, I got carried away.

No idea. The original picture I cropped it from was before I started naming my pictures.

I see. I've only let my artist tattoo thing's I've designed personally. Wasn't sure if he was flippant about because he thought it was mine or for some other reasons.

Every artist is different.

For me it's no problem at all if the design is decent and I can see the customer isn't an idiot.

I am seriously considering getting a blackout.
I know it's a dumb decision but goddamn I want it.

Talk me out of it.

What are some things clients do that make you appreciate them? Also, thanks for answering some things thoroughly.

You've only got so much space on your body user. Unless you've got a lot of shitty tattoos you can't cover up I wouldn't do it. People get frustrated with putting a small tattoo in a good spot much less blacking out entire appendages.

You Might like Pauly Fistfight.

I might get him to add some stuff around mine, kelp maybe. it'll fill the weird side-back space I have on either side.

Yo, is that your own work? Cause that looks amazing and is right up my alley. Post that insta mate.

As for the other side..I don;t know. I had hoped to fit another figure.

Incidentally since you're around I need firstly an independent look at GAËL Cleinow.

It's kind of a neat idea as a visual rejection vanity.
But in all reality, you're paying a lot of money for something that is not interesting, creative, or beautiful.
If you value the idea of tattoos I think that space and money could be put to better use.

Holy fuck. That's yours mate? First tattoo I ever saw that made me want an eel. Pic related was what sealed the deal though.

What about a negative-image tattoo? Similar to a blackout but with faint images left uninked.

Ah. Alright.

More at his work, I think I'm too blinded by the idea to be subjective. He's a weird guy to deal with though. I know it may well be the language barrier, but I've never had an artist who had already drawn a design then talk about changing it so dramatically. I mean I requested a small change but he;s away redrawing the whole thing which I find unusual. I'm willing to see it on the day, but it;s not what I'm used to.

Oh yes, I've been carting that one around for a number of years. I've slipped a bit now but I'm a strong swimming and enjoy freediving. It's a moray head stuck on a japanese eel body, because I wasn;t specific and we both had a different idea in our heads. he freehanded it straight on though, so no harm done. It;s certainly unique.

I've had that picture for a while and something about it was incredibly eerie but I wasn't ever able to figure it out. That's exactly what it was.

I work with eels pretty frequently. No idea how I didn't catch that.

My artist just emailed me back about the design; said it was going to be about hand sized. Is it rude to see the design before the day of?

I'll list them in no particular order:

>being on time
>not arguing about the price, or is at least polite and reasonable about lowering it
>asking for something in my style
>being flexible
>knowing what they want / having good taste as opposed to getting random meaningless shit in different styles just because tattoos are in fashion (not to be confused with getting something just because you appreciate it or you like a certain artist's style, I'm mostly talking about vapid normies)
>client has showered before
>pays the deposit, if necessary
>doesn't move during the session
>has an original idea, or a weird one (in the good sense)
>looks after the tattoo and applies the correct aftercare procedures
>obviously, someone who is polite, fun and or friendly
>good communication skills if I'm being contacted via social media or email
>not a time waster

I do really appreciate tips whether it be money, a gift, or food, or even just a coffee or drink from the shop next door, but I don't dislike someone for not doing it. Unfortunately a surprising amount of artists expect to be tipped, which I think is wrong.

I love his work.

No, its @straydogsociety's. I'm not as good as him, but it's what I aim for, and I come kind of close. Sorry but I don't post any personal info on Veeky Forums.

Stupid idea unless you have an arm full of tattoos you don't like any more. Blacked out arms rarely look that clean any way. A blacked out arm with no previous tattoos sounds very regrettable.

Maybe look into some blackwork instead? Or a thick band somewhere on the arm so you know what you're getting into. You need to be mentally prepared for having a black arm the rest of your life.

I thought you were in the army.
I always prefer to take a look-see at a design beforehand, but that's just me.

His buttplug and Yolandi dick sucking are both on me.

Haven't heard of him, but I've looked at his work and he seems to be good. I've worked with a lot of international artists and the language barrier / coming across as weird is a thing, but I would trust him. Worst case scenario, you don't like it and just have to walk away or come up with something else.

Hadn't noticed but you're the owner of that Sad Amish tattoo, I seriously love it.

I promise I won't come screeching into your studio smearing fecal matter all over your tools user.

What's your favorite thing you've tattooed? Also, have you ever had clients burn you?

I am. I'm an animal care specialist. My dream job haha.

It;s a little frustrating because the original idea is so good. I've tried to make it clear to him I like the text in particular, even though I don;t usually go in for that. It;s partially my fault because it was intended to cover the stomach, but I've shifted it to the top of the leg. Prime real-estate, if I don;t like it I don;t have the space left to not walk so I'm more worried about it than I usually would be.

Ah my Cuirassier. It was a rare combination of having a good idea and a good artist both come to me at the same time. Obviously it always helped that he;s french and i'm a ouiaboo. Bordeaux was nice.

In the military? I would have thought that was just horses and dogs.

I've been trying to make a decent design for my first tattoo for a while, I like it but I'm not too sure about it, anyone have any thoughts? Probably gonna put it on my upper arm or lower leg

Bet it would surprise you that Animal Care specialists are required to have a Secret level clearance at the minimum? It's not just horses and dogs haha.

Also, was pic related your design you sent to him?

That's pretty cute. Planning on getting it in coloru?

Not those CIA dolphins again.

It was a design he posted himself, which is the cause of my consternation.

I was thinking black and white. I don't really dig colored tattoos too much since I think they usually look kind of muddy, but my skin is probably light enough for it so maybe

I’m looking for my first tattoo. What’s the etiquette on bringing some ideas to an artist and asking for something like the pictures I’ve got?

That shit is real haha.

I don't like color either. I think it's a cool design.

Pretty much everything said. Be nice, be polite, don't give him your life story. If you are giving him other tattoos as reference I'd point out what specifically you like, not just "the tattoo".

Just keep on trying to communicate with him in a good fashion and hopefully it will work out.

Love it when good ideas and artists collide, I'm honestly a fan of that tattoo you have.

It's hard to pick a favorite.

Some of my first "big" tattoos that turned out alright filled me with satisfaction the next day when I saw the photos again (first few big pieces are a huge mental drain and dissatisfaction when you're new - still happens to me now even). I always enjoy ideas that are different, on genuine people, and within my style.

Can't say I have a favourite yet. I'm relatively new (2 years apprentice in the studio, 1 year as a resident plus the many years of working around and being involved with the tattoo scene).

Oh you've got to show us now user.

Nice, thanks user.

what's the name of the girl with swastika tattoo on her forehead

Ann Frank

1. Research and find the right artist for what you want
2. Get in contact
3. Use any kind of images, can be already existing tattoos, artwork, anything
4. If you don't have images but you're flexible and a fan of said artist's work, just describe what you want
5. Request any changes you want, or don't be afraid to say you don't like it
6. If the artist refuses to modify anything within reason, I would back out, I don't like "rockstar" tattooers
7. Be realistic about what you want and what you could expect from the artist
8. Communicate properly, be clear with what you want, but don't be annoying
9. Don't be a time waster!

Hope it helps, feel free to ask anything else.

I know the one he means, some russian instabait model type.

No portrayal of irony was intended tho. I really don't like those picturesque kinds of tats. Gonna stick to this aesthetic for as long as I'm gonna get ideas for them and as long as I've made the designs myself. I like my first tat better tho.

Finishing this up rn

Pun Pun poster pls.

Why did you stop though?

Just finished

That's a nice nipple user.

Thank u. Im getting my second tat today at the moment. Its the atomsk from fooly cooly.

Yeeeehawww

Is it rude to tag your artist in your tattoo post when he didn't post it to his Instagram?

...

I have thin/skinny forearms and would like a tattoo there. Should I try getting more muscle there before getting a tattoo?

...

Social media is for the feeble minded. So are tattoos.

...

That guys from hidden moon tattoo in Melbourne, I got one of mine from an artist there and I recognise his flash. Stray dog society on snap I think?

Sometimes we don't post work, but it's nothing personal. A lot of artists are very proud of their portfolio and what they post since Instagram says everything about who we are and where we're at as an artist. Doesn't mean he wasn't happy with his work.

I don't see anything wrong with it, if you're not sure just message him, or he can untag himself.

Most times tattoos don't stretch THAT much on the arms unless you go from skinny to full beastmode.

If you never had in mind going to the gym before a tattoo, it wont be worth it, notable gains take a long time to achieve.

Yes that's him, amazing studio/artists overall.

Would this look like shit

In that exact form? Yes.

Why would you want a tattoo dozens of people have already copied?

I didn't know people can untag. That's great.

Why does (do?) Veeky Forums hate their mothers?

Cute. I should get a condom man too.

I don't want to know the shit you do with it. You're a real freak.

Helicopter parents are retards. Who knew?
