It's more than somewhat popular. Everyone in my family dresses in plaid shirts, bluejeans, and boots with a big-ass heel. Even in pictures of my great grandparents they dressed that way. Most of it's just workwear really.

If youre in Nevada, then you can look at the buckaroo culture for inspo like pic related. I would suggest for jeans to wear higher top ones, those will give more of a "cowboy" feel. If you want a better levis style, try 501, 505 or 517s: those are more cowby in their cut, espically the 517. Generally, I would pair lighter shirts with lighter jeans, but your color pallet depends more on you. The biggest part is confidence though: trust me, some random dude on the interwebs who you'll never see that you probably don't look as stupid as you think. If you're in the American West, you can get away with the cowboy look pretty easy, its still quite popular.
