You probably say that because you've never seen anything by Pierre et Gilles

no

That’s a pretty cool painting. The Michelle one though, OhhhnoooooNoooNoononoooo

It's pretty great. I like presidential portraits that don't "follow the rules." Like jesus christ guys a little color wouldn't kill ya.

>Pierre et Gilles
Pierre's work looks nothing like Obama's portrait though? Maybe I'm just not getting your meaning.

party pooper.

its beautiful

it's captivates the majesty and authority of the position while giving it an artistic softness reminiscent of post impressionist work. a modern painting for a modern president

the colour palette and light dark balance is amazing

Yea I gotta admit this is a really really nice portrait. BUT id say it’s so close to par with JFKs.

michelle's though while an nice work of art doesn't really seem to fit particularly well in to the presidential tradition

maybe the artist was trying to make her appear more of a fashion icon like jackie kennedy or something lol

i'm getting really strong transcendentalist vibes from this too

i've no idea if that ties in with obama's politics though I don't really follow it

JFK's other portrait is also pretty good.
>painted around a year before he got got
>it looks unfinished

lol it's not modern at all! Kehinde Wiley famously plagiarizes neoclassical masters.
Besides, you probably meant contemporary as modernity ended in the 50-60's

damn that looks nice, it looks finished to me too

not his official portrait though

I think that's what really makes this obama one different

of course it's not a modern painting

it's modern in the context of presidential paintings

>wow that painting looks so modern!
>of course, I meant it's a painting of a living president!

These are interesting and thought provoking in the context of presidential paintings. What OP posted, not so much

Stop worshipping this satanic cock sucking child murderer.

Nobody said "Obama is such a cool guy"
We're just talking about the portrait.

Go listen to Felix lisp about Peter Daou being a sexy slut or some shit and calm down.

are those his own

those are GWB's paintings yes.

Not the guy you responded to but I actually really like em

they are; those are self-portraits.
I honestly think most of them aren't half bad either

the guy on the left also drew a picture of a black woman cutting of a white womans head, amerimutts will defend it anyway thou, amazing.

None of them are particularly amazing. They look a bit like what you might see in a high school art class. However, I think they show promise. If he's serious about improving, he could become a decent portrait artist.

given the context i'd say they're incredible, folk art at its best

They look so out of place tho, certainly Michelle her portrait. Also they don't communicate to me that these were presidential figures, they're more portraited as media figures to me.

I think they went with this artist just because he is black, and not because of his remarkable painting skills or anything like that.

It's not plagiarizing, he takes famous neoclassical paintings and replaces the subjects with modern icons. it's an homage, not ripping off famous pieces. part of Wiley's appeal is his take on neoclassical paintings

fine, I take it back.
It's not plagiarism, it's pastiche.
It's still quite boring in a contemporary context. Juxtapose level graphic design at best...

>Juxtapose
Silly me, I meant Juxtapoz

This portrait would only make sense if Obama's legacy had to do with saving the environment or stopping global warming or some shit. Instead, the backdrop is just some pointless greenery to make his portrait special compared to everyone else's. It's a decent portrait in itself, but contextually it makes absolutely no sense.

The greenery has a cute meaning behind it.
>African blue lilies for Kenya, his father’s birthplace
>Jasmine for Hawaii, where Mr. Obama was born
>Chrysanthemums, the official flower of Chicago, for the city where his political career began.

Nothing about them strikes me as particularly folksy. I think it might count as naive art, but folk art isn't a synonym for naive art (or bad art).

King nigger sitting in a jungle. Such a fitting setting.

The artist could have accomplished the same thing by painting a fucking vase of flowers instead of taking up the entire background and making it look like Obongo is in the Congo.

You don't see any fun in our first black president being surrounded by color?

this, but without the racism

the backdrop makes no sense and basically is just for attention grabbing (how fitting for millennials)

I like it a lot. Michelle however is hardly a portrait and more of a painting featuring a woman.

Regardless I suppose this makes the drumpflets mad

Future art historians will appreciate it as a desperate attempt to create the impression of rupture from predecessors transpiring in air of self importance and arrogant frivolity.
Or they'll say it's lit AF

I think you should take a look at some of the artist's other paintings before you tell someone to back off on the racism. You're definitely right about it being attention-grabbing, though.

Another thought-provoking gem. So brave. So profound.

two wrongs don't make one right, buster.

But don't you think it's concerning how the artist who created these obviously racist paintings was selected to paint the first black president's portrait?

Would wear on a t shirt

no, you just dont have any moral standing to be judging "racism" when you blatantly overlooked the artists other works

Just to be clear, you're telling me two wrongs DO make a right?

Almost as if you aren’t supposed to “get” art. HMMMMM

Back to /r/pol

>racism is only okay when its not directed at my race
All or none friend.

What would you propose as an alternative? What is the correct, rational response to seeing a painting of a white woman being decapitated by a strong, independent black woman?

How am I to respond to my forefathers and mothers being raped murdered and enslaved? How am I to respond to people calling me a nigger? How am I to repond to being judged before even showing my character? Once you have an answer to that and an alternative mode of action to itthen you'll have your answer.

>wh*toid women getting BTFO by blacc nubian goddesses
I see nothing wrong here desu

The jews were persecuted and enslaved while your people were still running around throwing spears and cave painting. Now they're mostly investment bankers and entertainment industry moguls. What's your excuse?

I work a decent living at what I do. The point I'm trying to make here. Is that you shouldn't shit on people then expect not to get shat on in turn. One minute you're posting about your hatred of niggers and in the next you're offended by the painting of a white woman being decapitated.

Hate only begets hate and violence only begets more violence. Its time for everyone to start taking a look at themselves and recognizing their flaw and failures and trying to improve as a person instead of just doing the same shit we've always done.

Oh wow the mean painting hurt my feelings

coolest monkey in the jungle

Perfect example right here folks.

BIX NOOD WE WUZ QWANZ AND SHEEIT

You didn't even have this saved on your hard drive? b8 posters are slacking.

You should tell that to this guy

It goes for everyone.

Balls deep White boi.

Wiley's oeuvre seems formulaic and conceptually repetitive, and while the political statement and pastiche of his repurposing has some novelty, he's such a commercial creature, continually churning out the same cheap ideas to his wealthy establishment patrons for exorbitant sums. Reading up on him, he offloads a portion of his artmaking to assistants and has studios in China to speed up production - I can't say I respect that

As for the presidential painting itself, the foliage looks nice (Kehinde's patterning is probably the best aspect of the his art), Obama's stance is purposeful ... beyond that, it's not fantastic. Obama looks overly exposed and almost cartoonish, the promotional art for Franklin in GTA V comes into mind.

This. The greenery has little contextual relevance, it seems like bait for coolest monkey in jungle jokes.

Michele Obama's looks cold and unrecognisable, big flop

Double post, here's a bigg high res photo of it, look how lazily the leaves are rendered

Yeah kinda looks like it cell shaded compared to how much detail was put into 44.

Many Renaissance painters also had large studios with many assistants. The Hyper individualist view of "a painter, who makes a work" is relatively recent-- many should be thought of more as directors are. Still the most important, still the name you need to know, but frankly, who cares if others worked on a piece?

> Reading up on him, he offloads a portion of his artmaking to assistants and has studios in China to speed up production - I can't say I respect that
That's how the vast majority of master painters have done it.

This has to be bait. This is bait, right?

He's Hawaiian. Hawaiian plants to give the background some relevance to him as a person. Come on dude.

>stylistic choice
>lazy

Oh boy you must be fun to do critiques with. Just in case you don't know, I'll explain why the leaves are cell shaded while he himself isn't. Less detail around the focus of a painting, especially a portrait, draws your eye to the focal point, which in this case is obama's self. If the leaves were rendered to the same extent as he is, it'd look like a cluttered mess.

>Dubya did a painting of Will Ferrell
This world is good.

this was directed at

No. Go take an art history class if you want to discuss art.

No, please don't tell people to take art history classes. We don't need more pretentious fucks dickriding hacks like Warhol.

No, many of the history's great master painters had their students or lesser known artists do work for them.
Granted they farmed out work locally, not to China, but still it's how a lot of masterpieces were made.

you're the worst

Rambrant barely did faces and didn't even do hands, let alone drapery; Koons does sketches and that's about it; Stark doesn't even bother coming up with his own ideas and puts his name on the work of his employees; I used to work for a recent Miami/Basel Designer of the year and I had to forge his signature before we shipped his "work" to galeries...

I can assure you that "master artists" like Bazille and Monet did not have Chinese assistants working in artistic sweatshops

I was just reading an article that made the same convenient point. I don't complain about it as a new practice, instead I take exception to it in Kehinde's gaudy work because his is part of a negative trend where highly commercial artists (such as Warhol, Koons, Murakami, Wei Wei, Piccinini) who do not possess the raw talent of the Renaissance painters offload their workload in a bid to make 'their' art a successful product in the wealthy art world and to establish a lucrative name for themselves. I'm not saying an artist must starve for their work, but heavily commercialised, outsourced art definitely screams a lack of authenticity. It's hollow.

Yeah exactly, for such a large work the foliage is such a cop out.

No, they had European assistants instead.

That's different, you're talking about impressionists; they were vehemently opposed to the classical way approaching art at the time and the hierarchical nature of the great ateliers, notably.

>stylistic choice is lazy and looks sub-par upon closer inspection

If he really wanted to concrete Obama's obvious centrality in the image, why did he make the president compete with the vibrancy of the background? Gradient or more realistic leaves painted in toned down colours would add a whole different dimension and richness to the image, perhaps adding some context to Obama's stern expression, whereas this background looks cheap. Of course most people are going to to see this work reproduced on the internet, on a small screen, and at that level the cell-shaded leaves work. In reality this thing has huge dimensions and in my opinion, the simplistic rendered flowers and leaves show a distinct lack of polish and interest (wow he poorly painted some flowers of relevance!). It's a conceptually confused and surfacey image.

It's pretty nice. Why does only one half of the chair have an armrest though, sort of fucks with the perspective a bit.

This is so fucking good. Definitely the GOAT.

YASS DEATH TO WHITEY

lol the funny man xD

Aren't those paintings supposed to be based on something from catholicism?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_beheading_Holofernes

doesnt look like her at all. plus needs big ass traps and gorilla arms

looks like shit. and it was made in a chinese workshop by chinese painters.

from a fb meme page

what happens when an artist is trying to be too flattering is that they remove too many imperfections and therefore actually highlight the imperfections in the public image of the model sitting.

I would like Michelle's portrait a lot more if the artist had done a better job capturing her likeness. It looks better from far away because you can at least imagine it looks something like her. Close up it looks like it could be her cousin or something at best. I know not all portraits have to be a photo realistic spot on likeness of who they're portraying but they really missed the mark with Michelle.

I like presidents that don't follow the rules. Like Jesus Christ guys a little color wouldn't kill ya.

Looks like some kind of boring pop art made in Illustrator.

I never understood this criticism, esp from people on the "right".

Yeah generally blowing people up is bad. Wars only serve those who can profit from it. Name one thing that war has done for you.
