Great philosopher, poor historian.

Do what thou wilst xd

>What? You want me to beg? You're the smartest guy I ever met. And you're too stupid to see... he made up his mind ten minutes ago.

...

Dean Norris???

That's Anton Lavey

isn't that aleister crowley?

pretty sure that's edgar cayce

He was right about "race" being a social construct before anyone else said so.

Whole thread will be nothing but criticism and insults from historical materialists who never read his books, and hilarious jokes about Breaking Bad.

Welcome to Veeky Forums.

As much as everyone tries to dismiss him based on memes, the fact is his system satisfies the scientific method, as it's not only the best explanation for countless historical mysteries, but has also proven to be predictive. It's a shame that academia seems to have since then completely abandoned trying to understand history and civilisations, aside from some extremely poor and misguided imitators of Spengler's like Toynbee and Huntington.

holy fuck

Definately got a better hold of the alpolonian/dionisian dichotomy than Nietzsche.

How obvious was it the rest of the world rise up to Europe when he wrote his "decline of the west"?

I've always thought Mr. Crowley looked like MineralsHank

He predicted all kinds of shit that weren't obvious at all when he was writing in 1917: the rise of socialist totalitarianism focused on cults of personality, the next world war, postmodernism, Thatcher and Reagan, the collapse of communism in Russia, the disappearance of large conscription armies in favour of small professional armies and smaller terrorist groups...

He's the only person who seems to have actually understood how history works.

The return of religion is another one that comes to mind.

I worship him

>In the spring of 1936 (shortly before his death), he prophetically remarked in a letter to Reichsleiter Hans Frank that "in ten years, the German Reich will probably no longer exist" ("da ja wohl in zehn Jahren ein Deutsches Reich nicht mehr existieren wird!")

A good historian.

bretty gud

Don't understand the hate some people have for him.

I like his more mysticist approach to History although I'm fully aware that I could never write anything even close. He represents the best of the late 19th and early 20th century in many ways.

He's pretty much GOAT, rivaled only by the grandmaster Nietzsche himself perhaps

Can it be that he dwnies that history is going in any certain direction which many ideologies think it does?

chill dude, he predicted the end of Western civilisation hahah

the most underrated philosopher of the XXth century.
the title of his magnum opus was a terrible choice. Spengler admitted that himself.

While plenty of historians still worship a materialist conception of history, Spengler developed a much more profound understanding of world history and human thought and action, based on Nietzsche and Goethe. Particularly, I guess you can see Spengler as an expander of the outlines of Nietzsches thoughts about world history.
Instead of a static view of history and culture like that of Marx (base and superstructure...), Spengler is capable of melding all thogether. Material geographical conditions affect the worldview of a culture, its fundamental drives and themes...
Not only is his historical analysis incredibly interesting (and legitimately prophetic), his analysis of western art and culture as well as his classification of middle eastern culture within the Magian culture is outstanding. Possibly even more excinting than his historical outlook.

Unfortunately, plenty of people seem incapable of grasping the generally metaphorical and abstract, plastic notions that Spengler works with, and are also generally limited by the title of the book. Even Adorno, who referenced his work seemed quite stuck with a very superficial view of Spenglers work. I suppose its understandable, considering the time that they wrote about it, but still, Spengler is pretty clear that he wasnt simply talking about the rise of fascism and socialism. The progression of modernity and the rise of the empire concept would be more than century long process. The concept of empire alone was completely botched by later historians that took influence from his work, unfortunately.

He really was ahead of his time on many ways. A lot of what he tackles and where he departs from is based on a form of thinking that I find eminently post-modern.
That he started writing The Decline of the West in the 1910's is astounding to me, considering what he wrote.

>the title of his magnum opus was a terrible choice. Spengler admitted that himself.
Der Untergang des Abendlandes? It's quite poetic. Of course the subtitle Umrisse einer Morphologie der Weltgeschichte is more descriptive of what the book actually is.

>Nietzsche
I don't really see any Nietzsche in Spengler desu. Goethe yes obviously.

>a form of thinking that I find eminently post-modern.
So much this. His philosophy is like an alternate timeline version of postmodernism.

He was literay wrong about Germany winning WW1 lmao so predictive

He never said anything of the sort.

Greatest philosopher of 20th century.

We need to go deeper

>race
>social construct

He got that one wrong, unfortunately. Races diverge heavily in disposition and intelligence. Exceptional individuals notwithstanding, the races fall on very different bell curves.

Spengler was heavily influenced by Nietzsche lol

In what way lol

He shits all over Nietzsche in his book.

Was Marx not influenced by Hegel because he shit on him (rechtsphilosophie)?

>The bell curve

Read his newest book where he admits that he falsified most of the information in that. the english underclass have the same ranking as inner-city African americans (Daymryle )

>Races diverge heavily in disposition and intelligence

It's a social construct. Science since the 1960s has had a consensus that it's a social construct.

>the english underclass

So african/pakistani englishmen :^) ?

>science
>impervious to politics

any specific criticisms?

did he predict which civilization will replace the west?

yr confusing "race" and "ethnicity" my good man.

Consider this: 150 years ago, italians, slavs, poles etc immigrating to the US were not considered "white". Now you'd look like a fool if you denied their "whiteness". Race is a concept that changes based on society's views. Its something we create based on arbitrary characteristics (skin tone, etc).

Ethnicity is the objective division of peoples by their genetic traits. It doesnt change.

None, because after the imperial decline period you start again from zero which is precisely what will happen after WW3

>whiteness

New world memery over races should be disregarded entirely when speaking about this subject.

Greatest philosopher of 20th century, even though he was German.

I'm amazed fascists like him, when he describes them as the death-rattle of empire.

Or perhaps he's wondering why someone would misuse the term fascism as a buzzword without even knowing the meaning of it like some braindead shitlib retard underageb&

Not so.

He describes 'Faustian' (Western) civilization as being in some way descended from 'Appolonian' (Greco-Roman) and 'Magian' (Jewish-Islamic) civilization.

He also describes Russia as being a unique civilization, overlaid with Western forms. There is a soft prediction that it will be the next big thing, though I don't think he names it.

I'm using the word correctly here.

The fascists of Italy, France, and Spain, and the semi-fascists of Germany, were predicted by Spengler.

Bump

Final bump.
