HDN1 is a pile of shit gameplay wise and really, really hard to play unless you adore the series. R;B1 isn't quite the same game and has many differences in more than just the mechanics, but it's a fine start. R;B2 and 3 are remakes of mk2 and Victory, the following PS3 games.

It's been ages since I last played RB1, what's Arfoire's back story again? Something about helping 4 heroes defeat a goddess or something, and then she becomes evil for reasons I don't recall?

I've also completely forgotten her motivation/reasoning for doing the stuff she does.

She was part of the hero quartett to defeat the former goddesses/god, then some time later Histoire mentioned that she was also raising Noire, Blanc, Vert and Neptune for a set amount of time before turning Insane due to the amount of power she had through defeating the former goddess/gods
In the last sequence of the true ending, where Purple heart and Arfoire disappear, Purple Heart states again that she wanted the power to "raise us properly" but couldnt handle it, her main reasoning is that she wants all the power to rid the world of goddesses so that the strongest might rule
