Well, SFV is the natural first pick as it has been designed accessible to new fighter players.
street fighter 5 is the easiest way to start, look up some tutorials, lots of them are applicable even if they arent about street fighter 5 specifically, find the nearest locals you can attend, people are usually very helpful or open to helping you learn, if you can the best thing you can do is have another friend who is a beginner as well get interested, building a rivalry and pushing each other to get better, its terrific as long as your egos can handle it

I'm in the same boat as you, man, just a few years older. I tried GG Xrd at first because I had a ton of fun with the franchise back in the day, but on a competitive level, it was too much for me to get my head around.
Then I started playing SFV a few weeks ago, and I've been having a blast while learning the fundamentals of fighting games as a whole. Plus the game is still very young, so it's something you can both learn and grow with.

Stop panicking for once. You can use st.mk to catch people off guard but it's -1 so they can press buttons after it. Learn to anti-air and use st.mp as it functions as a very good anti-air. The only reason you want to use st.mk is when you're applying pressure through frametraps. St.mp > st.mp st.mk(-2), you can cover this up with EX clap to continue pressure into a tick throw or command grab.
Punish obvious things like DPs with your dedicated crush counter button(st.hk) and learn your crush counter combos. One option you can also do is st.mp into st.mp st.mk and v-skill back, other characters cannot normally punish you for it but the it will be reset to neutral.
Always try to use cr.mk to whiff punish, it's your best button and beats every single shoto's cr.mk range by far, it's 3rd strike levels good.
Last thing, bind your throw to 3P or 3K buttons, there's no ultras in this game so you're free to use it, v-reversals are easy enough to input and you have a lot of time for it. Get used to hitting two buttons for EX moves.

You can always asks for sets here and just say you are new. That's what I did when I tried to learn ST. Lobbies are the best way to learn in my opinion.
