The aim of socialism is to make society classless through the elimination of private property. This is firmly rooted in the Marxist analysis of classes based on property as opposed to class being defined by income brackets. The point isn't to give everyone a middle-class wage (as a matter of fact there should be no money either), the point is to give everyone control over their workplace.

To be fair the only kind of socialism that's been tried on any notable scale is Marxism-Leninism.
