What would be the best engine for a Cave Story-esque platformer?

Whenever I have the Unreal UI Editor open or I'm constantly running the game to see if things are working I run out of memory really really fast. Not entirely sure what is causing it but in regards to the former it is most likely my fault.

Having a blank project opened with a blank UI widget opened in the editor does not cause my memory usage to go up. Opening the UI widget I'm working on in that same blank project causes the memory usage to slowly creep up.

So something I did in the UI is fucking up. Anyways it's my shitty solution to Unreal using 4GB of ram after like 3-4 hours.

As for my game itself, when running a standalone window doesn't use up more than 400K when using it or leaving it idle overnight.

UE4 is sounding worse and worse by the day. Glad I use Unity. :^)

+Can select which enemy to attack, the crosshair knows where the enemy sprite is
+UI turns green to signify that you selected an action for that character
+The defend action now works
+Health bars reflect damage done
+Attacks have a chance to miss/be dodged
+Resolution logic mostly done to set all the UI back into place minus moving active portrait back and updating active health bar to reflect damage done.

Like I said, it's a shit solution, still trying to figure out what is causing it and I at least narrowed it down to that specific UI widget. I've messed around with the profiling tool but I don't really understand how to use it yet.

I did need more ram though so this was just more of just the straw that broke the camel's back.

coincidence, I actually have never increased my virtual memory and I'm pretty sure it wasn't that high. I think there's an automated setting that is just setting my virtual memory to double my physical memory. It may have also increased possibly due to how often I have been hitting 99% this week.

just played it. top quality stuff . so for criticisms was bit thrown off by enemies making the same attack sounds as the player. this will be steam hit for sure. finish it mate.

The HP was a mistake, I was too busy panicking about uploading that I forgot to bring their health down. They have around 300HP right now, normal attacks do 10 damage for reference.

The damage they do is intentional though I'll reduce it a bit.
I want enemies in this game to keep you on guard, even simple ones.
The challenge I want to make is surviving through all the levels without using continues but there are save spots and easier difficulties planned

There's no guarding but you can dodge/dash, V on keyboard is the default key. Most attacks can be dash cancelled during the animation or on hit so you use that. Dashing his i-frames.

It used to work that way before. I thought it would be too easy that way but I might change it back depending on the feedback I get.

It's a shame you missed the rotates vs. mothdan arc because it was the best filler anime I've seen

Does it matter(performance/load times) how many vertexes/faces my player model has?
The player character I am working on has already 2000 vertexes even though it's like half finished. According to google, game characters usually have like 5k-7k vertexes so I guess it's all good for now but I am new to 3D modeling and I really don't want to pick up any bad habits

It's all a matter of target hardware, but no, 2000 is not a lot, especially if it's a player character who is always close up and only appears once.

Anyone who says modern game character have 7k are stuck in 2007, iirc Paragon targets 80k per character (with proper LoD models of course)

100% depends on whats your target minimum requirements

There were a lot of ps2 games with 7k characters. (Silent Hill) I don't know where that number came from b/c the high quality games of last gen were around 25k. (Like Nathan Drake)

There, it's done.

Finding no sane-person-type solution, went ahead and created 3 versions of the firing animation to use for the various aim poses.

It STILL doesn't strictly work 100% of the time, since when the gun is twisted sideways (for example, when doing a diving shot) the recoil is still world-space-up, but that doesn't look as bad as the roll-wiggle recoil did so I'm not gonna bother fixing it now.

Holding out hope that UE4 eventually supplies proper bone-space additive animation options, of course, since I shouldn't have HAD to duplicate the animation rotated 90 degrees just to make this work, but I'm nothing if not willing to put up with ass-backwards workarounds to achieve simple things.
