After the destructive Timurid wars which reshaped the demographic landscape, the rise of the Gunpowder Empires which began to consolidate the Muslim world under Persianized high culture, which sparked a renaissance period of their own involving a lot of monumental architecture, literature, and art. The old Arab trade routes of the Gulf, Malabar, and Zanzibar began to decline under Portuguese intrusions which helped lead to the rise of several trade and banking families of Central Asia dominating inland trade for the next few centuries.

Ilkhanate continued to exists well into 14th century, during Petrarch's lifetime, and after its collapse many successor dynasts were mongol, like Timur himself.

Between 1500 and 1700 it was a golden age of empire-building, art and architecture, but also a period of intellectual decline and growing religious conflict between Sunnis and Shiites. Aside from the massive gunpowder empires of the Ottomans, Safavids and Mughals, there was the Bukhara Khanate in Transoxiana, the Saadi Dynasty in Morocco and the Deccani Sultanates of India, all of which had their zenith in this period.

Another notable occurrences and trends;

>the loss of Muslim dominance in the Indian Ocean to Europeans, especially on the Swahili Coast (very suddenly) and in Indonesia (gradually)
>fall of Songhai in West Africa
>European artistic influence in 17th century painting

From the 18th century onward most of Muslim world goes to shit.

>Timur fucks up Persia and India, his descendant founds the Mughal Empire

>A Persian Sufi order, the Qizilbashi, claim they have a child who is descended from Caliph Ali and therefore the rightful Shia Caliph
>They establish a stronghold in Persia and establish the Safavid dynasty with the boy as its founder
>Swahili city states such as Mogadishu, Zanzibar become powerful trade powers in the Indian Ocean trade
>the Ajuuran Sultanate flourishes in Somalia and the rest of the Horn
>Christian Nubia is reduced and converted by neighboring Muslim emirates
>the Christian Kingdom of Ethiopia is still prevalent
>Ottomans establish dominance or at least suzerainty over the Maghrebi states excluding Morocco
>These Maghrebi states later become famous as the Barbary pirates
>Safavid, Ottoman, and Mughal Empires become the 3 most powerful Muslim states in the world
>Omani Sultanate establishes trade dominace over Swahili trade

Then the Muslim world declines

>Portuguese capture important trade cities (Socotra, Muscat in Arabian Peninsula, Goa in India, etc.) and eventually dominate Indian Ocean Trade
>Mughals decline, Marathas in India put up opposition to them
>Ottoman Empire begins losing control of the Barbary States and Egypt
>Ottomans also lose land in the Balkans
>Janissaries assert power, overthrowing the Sultan more than once
>As the Europeans pursue trade and colonial ventures in the Americas the Muslim trade empires begin losing importance
>Russian Empire expands across Central Asia, swallowing up Muslim khanates along the way

The rest is just European colonialism (British in Egypt/Sudan, French in Algeria/Tunisia, Spanish in Morocco, Italians in Libya and Somaliland, and of course their attempted conquest of Ethiopia AKA Shitfest of Adwa)

Mogadishu was Somali, not Swahili. The Swahilis flourished between the 10th and early 16th centuries, but the 16th and 17th were mostly a Portuguese shitfest. Zanzibar was more an 18th/19th century thing.

Nah, they declined in the later 15th century and were completely ruined by the Adal invasion and subsequent Oromo migrations in the 16th centuries. They were weak throughout the 17th century and didn't recover until the late 19th.
