Why do most people claim to be Christian when they themselves haven't read the bible all the way through?

Why do most people claim to be Christian when they themselves haven't read the bible all the way through?

Only the gospels matter

You don't need to

Throughout most of history the majority of Christians were literate peasants who listened to the village priest when in came to matters of faith.
Thus, most common people never read the Bible and those who did were scholars, priests and nobility.
This remained so even when literacy was becoming widespread 100-150 years ago.

Same reason for why most socialists haven't read Marx. Reading is just boring.

I ask the same of atheists. If they read the whole Bible, they wouldn't be.

>and nobility.
Heresy.

Is it any good though?

Link me to goodreads pls

Why do most people claim to be Christian when they are relying on their own works to get into heaven and not putting all their faith on Jesus Christ?

read Matthew and the sermon on the mount to get yourself started

If most Christians actually read the bible then they wouldn't be Christians.

Not all socialists are Marxists (although I agree that all socialists should read Marx anyway).

(You)

i remember trying to read it when i was young and being overwhelmed by the idea of hell. i thought, "if i don't believe in it then i'm safe". so i didn't read it and almost became a wiccan, true story.

i've grown up quite a bit since then and started reading it. i just realized that fear should not be the reason to discredit the bible.

Its easier to tell yourself and others that you're christian than to actually read the bible and come up with your own conclusion. I think most people dont like to think about it too much.

>Then sandicus beat the tribe of shit, because yahweh favors us
*Also tribe kikielberg shows lineage to sandicus from incest with his mother

The Bible is the central sacred text of the religious tradition; Christianity is, at the very least, a way of looking at and living in the world. These are mediated through a system of symbols that includes the Bible but by no means is contained between its covers.

I think when people self-identify as Christian but do not frequent church or study the Bible often, they are saying that their metaphysical orientation to life is Christian, even if their practices or daily lives aren't.

Because they wouldn't remain christian if they have read the bible.

...

Badly edited, poor continuity and internal consistency. Authors seem to change between books. Plot is cliched and thin, with virtually no character development save for Judas Iscariot. The main characters of Jesus and Moses are entirely one dimensional messianic figures. The novel opens with Adam and Eve, and then ignores them for the next thousand pages or so. The built-in bookmark was a nice touch, but a little pretentious.

Oddly, it wasn't shelved with the other fiction books.

Another reason why Jehovah's Witnesses are right.

>Just pick up the Bible and read it. You don't need any commentary. You don't need any context, just start reading it and the Holy Ghost will provide it for you

Yes you do
Gtfo

Reading the Bible is likely to give you all sorts of heretical thoughts, especially if you do so in the original languages.

Plenty of literal saints did not read the Bible.

This is the most reddit-tier post I have ever read.

The worst part is that Christians think it's okay to spoil the ending for everyone else.

Should socialists need to read Das Sozial to become real socialists?

>I ask the same of atheists. If they read the whole Bible, they wouldn't be.
/this and /this and /this
No. Reading the whole Bible, and understanding its horrors and internal contradictions, turns Christians into atheists.

"Dad. Why did God kill...?"

>Another reason why Jehovah's Witnesses are right.
Starting with the Trinity, yep!

>Badly edited
Given the documents provided, Ezra did a great job redacting the Torah.
(see JEDP textual criticism)

>pic (sarcasm)

Why do protestant ministers claim to be experts on the bible and wave the fact that HURR WE READ IT COVER TO COVER when unlike Catholic/Anglican/Orthodox/Insert Pre-Reformation denomination Priests & scholars, they havent read Koine Greek/Latin texts of it and contemporaneous writings relative to the time the Bible was compiled?

Most Protestshits are just white collar cunts who read the bible as a hobby.

>implying fedora implications

Excellent answer!

Why would atheists have to read the Bible specifically?
Or do you meant that they also have to read the Quran and other holy books?

That is like saying no one has truly ever been alive because they haven't died yet.

Or someone isn't American because they don't live in all 50 states.

>Latin texts
¿Why?
Latin IS NOT an original language of the Scripture.
Reading the Vulgate (Bible trans by Jerome) is only good for understanding Liturgical Latin, it isn't even written in Classical Latin.

You're not obliged to

The gateway to atheism, at least for christians, is thorough knowledge of scripture.

I should have added extreme Bible knowing. Or an obligation to. But the thing is mistakes in christianity. Still Bible knowing can make it worse

They reference the Book as proof of their legitimacy. Do they not?

Also, /which/ gospels? Q?

There were Christians for 400 years before the bible was compiled

The bible is not neccasarily the important thing for one's salvation. Yes, it is a verbal icon, no, that does not mean that every believer needs to read every word of the canon. The bible was made for man, not man for the bible. It's not the Quran.
About that. I've read the bible back in forth in three different languages (Latin, Greek, and English). I've read most of the commentaries which the pre-schism church fathers have articulated on the scriptures. I'm a Christian.

It's not a 'thorough knowledge of scripture' that generates atheists, it's bad exegesis and eisegesis along with failure to recognize historical context.

Hi Constantine.

Who?

I think it is worth it in any case to have been or be part of a church for some years and know the Bible because of that. Read it then and be part of it.

His name was actually Stan Bull, which is why we correctly call it Istanbul today. Constantine is taken backwards from 'Constantinople'.

Then the name was changed later to Constantinople, which means 'Capital of the Byzantine Empire' in Turkish.

beware the leaven of the pharisees and the leaven of the sadducees!

Why do most people claim to be literate when they haven't read all of every tradition of human knowledge?

Because Sola Scriptura is Heresy.

Why do so many clansmen claim to worship the fire spirit when they haven't taken the sacred mushrooms and climbed the fiery mountain?

For most people, religion is a social experience. You believe what your parents did. It's not your life's great quest, but a place to meet girls.

That's why priests exist, it's their job to worry about the details. It's our job to put a 20 in the collection plate, and do unto others. If your priest does his job, he'll tell you how to stay out of hell that way you don't have to learn hebrew. Keeps things nice and simple.

Can confirm. I'm a Socialist but I disagree with Marx on shitload of things. I've read his main works, but still never particularly impressed me.

Not only that, they don't read it in the language god intended.

Anyone who reads the old testament instantly becomes atheist, happened to me.
