The best way I can describe playing Symmetra is to play her like a spider. Set up your turrets like a web.
For instance, rather than making a "kill room" and putting all of your turrets in one place (which means that one good enemy push will destroy all of your turrets) make a "kill zone", meaning anyone who tries to take a certain route to the zone, is going to die unless they are very, very careful. Hide your turrets every few feet, hide them low, hide them high, hide them in boxes/bushes etc... basically make it a pain in the ass to rush through an area.
Furthermore, make sure you are spamming your orbs, that way if an enemy does try to rush your route, they will start off taking some good orb damage, along with whatever turrets they run through. When you get close to the enemy try to be a pest. Your laser beam locks on to enemies, so make sure you are jumping around and running in circles to confuse the enemy.
Don't be afraid to jump into teamfights either, your laser beam does insane damage when charged all the way. Obviously don't be the first one to jump into a big mess, but try and jump behind and get that thing charging (you can also charge it on Winston shields/ Mei ice walls btw). Once youre fully charged you can basically nuke squishy characters and can 1v1 most tanks. Also, try and drop a turret or two during teamfights while you are jumping around to add additional confusion/dps
Finally, know when to switch from symmetra/fall back. Symmetra requires a decent amount of time to set up (I usually can only get 5 turrets set up in places i like by the time the enemy is out of the gates). If the enemy is steamrolling, you either need to switch characters or start setting up at the next chokepoint/capture point. She's a defensive character, she's not going to be the one to push the enemy team back, but rather keep them from pushing forwards, There's a difference and you need to make sure you know your team's situation.

During beta and on release you could actually win a solo quick play game. People would communicate. People would have fun and go all one hero.
But now: Nobody says a word. Everybody is toxic. Everybody plays genji or hanzo. Nobody plays support or tank. What the hell happened to the playerbase?
