Can you guys give me some advice about this genre? I've seen DayZ, H1Z1, Rust, ARK and I don't know which to choose. Steam Charts show H1Z1 doing poorly and the rest doing very well. Has anyone here played them all, anything I should avoid?

Ark isn't anything like this. It's dinosaur hunting with no pvp.

Rust isn't anything like this. It's basebuilding with naked women.

H1Z1 is streamer bait. DayZ with a cartoon filter and more hackers.

I'm pretty sure ARK has pvp, I saw one guy starting out and he ended being pelted arrows and having to defend himself.

But the games seem to have a familiar feel of survival, starting with nothing and trying to stay alive

It's a choice the server owners make. And most of them are 14 year olds who just want to collect them all (the dinos).

If you're just starting out in the suvival genre, you're pretty late to the game and have missed out on all the good stuff. Now the market is saturated and all the devs kowtow to little kids and forum dads who are pissed at losing all the gear they spent 3 hours collecting.

if you want a good pure survival game, play The Long Dark.

If you want an FPS with scavenging and dressing up your personal barbie doll, play DayZ.

If you want an FPS where you spend 3 days building a base, then it gets raided by the server owner, play Rust.

If you want an FPS where you tame dinosaurs and a bunch of casuals and children fly around showing off their Pterodactyls, play Ark.

If you want to play an FPS where you get killed by hackers play H1Z1.
