Well, most of these expansionism was caused by first caliph, after umeyyids (curse be upon them) paid to uqba ibn nafi and his army to "free" (kill) north african cultures and arabize them. Shias had not their state until mongol invasion, when many mongol generals turned to Shia Islam. The cause for OP reasoning may be because Sunnism was the state-promoted religion and most of the people blindly supported them, even when they were opressors.
