The problem I've always had with Hearts of Iron is that it's something of a solved equation: We know how WW2 went, and we know the various factions involved have wildly varying levels of power. Kaiserreich solves this by it's alt-hist character and by it's design goal of making as many countries playable as possible. It's particularly good for multiplayer games imo, thanks to the large event trees they've written for all the main countries. Hell, even the USA is worth playing because it has a potential Second Civil War event chain.

Mongolia, under Mad Baron Ugern von Starnberg, has the opportunity to annex the whole of Siberia. Austrailia is also stronger, having absorbed PNG and New Zealand, and can contest the Pacific with Japan. China has a lot more events and you can lead any of the factions there to overall unification if you play your cards right.

Asia is probably one of the more unrealistic areas of the game, but it's still pretty interesting. A renewed Qing Empire under Puyi has the potential to become a powerhouse provided it can take on a rebellious warlord state the west, a Mongolian Empire under the Mad Baron von Ungern-Sternberg, and a fairly strong Japan. Japan is hit pretty hard by Black Monday (KR's version of the Great Depression), so you can take advantage of that to beat them.

India is also fairly interesting, with it being split between a commie east, princely south, and British west. The south usually collapses into infighting, leading to the other two picking up the scraps. Whoever gets the most usually wins against the other when they inevitably go to war.

How is HoI4 related to WW1 at all? You can take any nation and roll over the AI pretty handily. Their division composition and decision-making is awful.
