Technically the Quran doesn't prohibit alcohol at all, it prohibits the drinking of grape wine specifically(probably because that was the predominant alcohol at the time).

The passage that talks about grape wine is translated as alcohol usually, but there are Islamic theologians who take that passage literally, and say that you can drink everything except grape wine.
