Basic idea behind it is decks are selected. Each deck has all the same card but are different from each other. Mandatory cards are land cards and gold cards. You use your gold cards to buy more cards and land cards are your win condition. It's basically a deckbuilding game.

The only way for a deck to dominate in this meta is to be PePe levels of broken. For D/D/D to be topping so much and consistently in such a varied meta is proof that it's really one of the best archetypes ever made.

So the DD/Blue Eyes match-ups ended up with DD on top.
Lamia and her easy synchros that do not restrict you to fiends really made a huge difference for the deck. Howling/Berfomet combos were nice but limited.

2 years ago, I played it pretty much as a Leonidas Control deck with Valkyrie covenant or Yolo Kaiser play, with Temujin/Alexander combo being there just for field presence.
The deck only really started being kinda abusive when Ragnarok, Arc and the slimes came out
