What did he mean by this? No but I'm actually serious. What part of the Finnish identity are you interested in, OP?

do they have any real known history?
aside from being ocupied

Fugg :DDDDD

>history

Begins with written language. Scandinavians adopted the runes from the Etruscans and later the Latin Alphabet from Romans.
Finland has a deep and mysterious past though.

I don't think you know what occupied means

Finland was a province of Sweden

Depends on what you mean by being occupied. I wouldn't really call either the Swedish or (most of) the Russian period as occupation.
During Swedish rule it was an integrated part of the country and before that there weren't any Finnish state, except from possibly some petty kingdoms of which very little is known.
During Russian rule the country was very autonomous until the russification period at the beginning of the 20th century.
Finnish culture is a fine mixture of two larger cultures to the west and the east, together with little bits of their own.

I don't see much anything Russian in Finnish culture though.

Civil War in which the white army of land owners and troops trained secretly in Germany fought the Socialist reds.

Winter War in which the country defended themselves against an army tenfold their size using cunning strategy, they did lose in the end though.

The Continuation War, the finns challenged the Soviets to take back lost land, this time with Nazi Germany's troops on their side

>Kalevala
>Not the authentic Finnish culture
>Not more impressive and beautiful than anything Germanics and Slavs have ever created

ahem

The Russification is a result of Finnish identity which they helped revive turned against them

Its fair to say Russia created Finland and that they would be speaking Swedish if it wasn't for Russia

>>Mocking the remnant of the mighty nation that protected all mankind from the tyranny of the hwan during the hyper war and suffered tremendously due to the activation of the mass autism relay in giza.

Shameful, simply shameful.

How relevant are Moomins outside of Nordic countries and Japan? I rarely hear anyone referring to them on English websites.

Yes, I'm sure it was literally just about to happen after half a millennia

Am I reading things right when I get the impression that the Norse runic alphabet can be traced back to the Phoenicians originally?

Afaik they're the shit in Eastern Europe too

At least the poles made several tv shows with puppets and shit

>written by "Elias Lönnrot"

Staying as a part of Sweden wouldn't have been that bad for Finland though, where as being part of Russia would have sucked.

Russians really like them
t.Russian

Did you actually think Germanic people were actually capable of creating anything in their "destroyer of civilization" phase when they were just jealous and violent snow baboons?
Etruscans travellers/traders taught them so much

Finnish speaking Finn whose Swedish was unusually bad for his time

>yfw Finnish mythology was so cool even the swedish speaking upper crust was into it
>yfw swedish speaking and named finns started changing their names to finnish equivalents

Lönnrot was not a Sweco fuck off
He was so Finnish he struggled with Swedish

Filthy hunter-gatherers

It's not as visible as the Swedish influences, but it's there. Most cities and towns have an orthodox christian church. You might also notice that Finns have a bit other mentality than the Swedes, which comes a lot from the Russians (along with being more culturally conservative). Then there's also the fact that Finland was under Russian rule during a time in which Russia was more interested in being, or at least looking, more European.

Here we come to the problem of understanding what's actually "Finnish". Kalevala is an epos based on Karelian oral tradition, seen through the rose tinted glasses of a Fenno-Swedish physician. It's hardly representative for, say an Ostrobothian guy, much less for the Saami (but maybe you don't consider them Finnish, oh well). Finland isn't, and certainly didn't use to be, as homogeneous as people want to believe.

I repeat, Lönnrot came from a Finnish speaking family and struggled with speaking Swedish because he wasn't exposed to it at a young age.
Ostrobothnians don't matter and Lapps even less.

You're right, he wasn't Swedish speaking. I wrote that too hastily, but my point still stands. He was a romantic editing old songs from a rather foreign culture.

>Ostrobothnians don't matter and Lapps even less.
More than half of the country is totally irrelevant. OK.

hyvää päivää

Pohjanmaa ja Lappi ovat molemmat vaan aakeeta laakeeta.

Ostrobothnians losing their oral mythology is their own fault, they can shut up and appreciate Kalevala or just shut up.
Oral mythology is one of most defining aspects of traditional Baltic Finnic culture.

talk about hellstinky am I right

Potatoes, reindeer, cold, mosquitoes, berries, alcohol and snowmobiles

That's their identity

What said, but I'll go further:
>Our first proper wave of urbanisation came during Russian rule, meaning lots of towns are built in Russian neo-classical style.
>Painting eggs at Easter is an Orthodox tradition that the Finnish Lutherans adopted wholesale.
>Although it's dying out, Karelians used to have a lot of Russian loan words in their dialect, especially those from the Viipuri area. Same thing goes for Helsinki slang.
>There's a neighbourhood in Turku referred to as Port Arthur. That's because it was built right after the Japanese capture of the real Port Arthur and some labourer bantered that they're rebuilding it on the other side of the Empire so the Nips can't get to it.
>Our folk music can sound Russian as fuck sometimes.

>implying they don't identify fully as Finnish though

not being occupied. it's been pretty important to us.

Mannerheim - Swedish
Linus Torvalds (creator of Linux) - Swedish
Fredrik Idestam, Leo Mechelin (founders of Nokia) - Swedish
Tove Jansson (author of the Moomin books) - Swedish

Literally everything notable in Finland was created by Swedes while ethnic Finns are pretty much Australian Abo tier

>Finland
>irrelevant
Except for the fact that they defeated Nazi Germany by fooling Hitler into thinking Russia was a pushover.

Top post, lad

You're going places

>Mannerheim - Swedish
Kraut actually, you dummy

Gadolin who discovered the element Yttrium had Finnish heritage though. His family took a Hebrew name because it was so ebin at the time.

>first name Johan
>Gadolin was fluent in Latin, Finnish, Russian, German, English and French in addition to his native Swedish.
>native Swedish

Really makes you think

Still had Finnish heritage
Do you even know anything about Finland-Swedes?
Only a fringe minority are actually descended from Swedish colonists and they live in some shithole in Närpes farming tomatoes.
Many others like the Gadolin family are Finns who became Swedish speakers

Stop wewuzing Pekka, his father was actually from Sweden proper, nothing Finnish about him whatsoever.

His father was born in Sweden and his paternal grandfather was born in Finland

>Swedes genuinely believe that ethnic Finns can become Swedes in a way that retroactively makes their ancestors Swedish as well

Amazing

Older culture than the swedes, pretty solid warriors but when they weren't tossing shit and spears at the slavs they mostly sticked to themselves farming, taking a sip of that good stuff, punch Jarpi in the face, go home, slap and shag the wife then re-do until times called for the sword and shield.
