If you play it on normal it's easy as fuck but if you play it on hard the game usually forces you into using specific digimon and strict battle plans on harder fights which sort of kills the freedom in making your party.

Just recycle all the garbage stuff. You'll get tons of useless skills and eventually you'll get what you want. There's no really science to it apart from whatever you use the most will be the equipment type the skill will be for. At least, that's what I can make of it.
