Lots of american cars stopped lifting up the rear window because that weakened rear collision safety requirements. With increased requirements, manufacturers reduced the rear window visibility in order to have the rear windshield part of the body instead of a large lifted door. The trunk lid still opens with a low threshold. It certainly is useful to have that low rear threshold when carrying long things such as lumber or a long PVC pipe. It also makes it much easier to get groceries and cargo in and out of the car. The only thing I don't like is the reduced visibility thru the rear window.

The C3 had no trunk lid. It had a shadow trunk where the roof panels could be stored, but the only way to access it was a slot behind the seats. Seriously.
