Depends on what you're hauling really.

Sides help to contain your load (gravel or loose material, for instance) but if your shit is wider or longer than the tray itself it will need to hang over the edge, obviously.

Far as I know they don't lock in the down position, only in the up.

The back side would be hanging over your tail lights in the down position though, so you wouldn't be able to drive around with it down for any length of time.
