I'd recommend a Ducati V-twin like SP2, SP4. Or inspired bikes like VTR1000F (NOT R). Those are sport-touring bikes that's not terribly hard to handle and they're easy to do a wheelie on (he'll be able to impress his friends and girls).
This is actually a non-meme answer, people in my country like to start with liters and they're usually recommended V-twins like TL1000 because those are easier to use than inline 4s.
If you want a "real" sportbike just buy him a decent cheap injector like Honda 929.
