So i bought an e39 about a month ago and it needs to be fixed up because the previous spic owner was too poor to do any maintenance and just wanted a good looking car.

it needs the valve cover gaskets replaced, belts changed, and the brakes got soft one day so i need to hopefully just bleed the brakes, since the guy claimed to have just replaced the pads.

my question is how do i do a brake job on this car? i've honestly never worked on a car ever but everything else has tutorials online and im not a complete idiot. any help would honestly be appreciated since i havent been able to drive the fucking car since it isnt safe. thanks

also, ive noticed a really dangerous thing that happens sometimes. i'll be driving and when i try to come to a stop, the car would just turn off. the lights flicker but come back on but the engine stays off. this is really dangerous because it could easily cause an accident.

I've done some research and saw it could be the ignition switch failing but wanted a second opinion or to see if anyone has had this happen. really fucked issue.

You're worse than the previous spic for buying it. What you couldn't tell if the cover is leaking?

idc about a leaking valve cover, i can change that easily, its about the other things that i didnt know about

Yet you're asking "HOW2DO BRAEKZ"
Look it up on Google, follow the steps, be very careful, triple check your work before putting the car in motion.

ok i obviously have tried google and wanted someone that actually knows how to do it on an e39, not some dipshit trip called "E320withabodykit" to try and act superior. thanks for your help faggo

Did you not take it on a test drive? What the fuck is wrong with you? You should always buy the nicest example of a car you can find. You're going to spend on repairs what you saved by getting a beat up example.

nothing is wrong with me, of course i took it on a test drive. it happens rarely and randomly so the seller got lucky. the funny thing about it, is that this was pretty much the best e39 i could find, no matter the price.

i just want some help from someone pls

YouTube how to do an e39 brake job.

>i've honestly never worked on a car ever
Then you definitely shouldn't be fucking around with a system as important as brakes for your first proper wrenching session.

If the car is having an intermittent failure of power then it's gotta be throwing a code. Get that fucker read with an OBDII scanner.

it never throws a code, I've even had the car read at an advanced auto parts and nothing. really weird

that pretty much helped me with the brake issue desu. i just needed the confidence of a proper tutorial to let me know i can do it

Check a forum too. There should be a thread on it somewhere.

It's ez
I did my brakes on my Jeep. all you have to do is take the wheel off and switch the pads.I didn't even use the correct pads but they still worked.
cars are super easy to work on

>buying a car from a spic
>buying a high-maintenance luxury car from anyone other than an upper-middle class white family
You asked for it.

>bmw serie 5
>luxury

> bought a bmw
> from a spic

Enjoy spending as much on repairs as that car cost.

maybe a stupid suggestion, but why not just take it to a bmw specialist? Ofc you're gonna pay alot more then doing it yourself, but I wouldn't fuck with the brakes if I never worked on a car before.

yeah the spic now has a pontiac g8 that is literally riced out to look nice lol
at least he installed a proper subwoofer and amp for really good audio

bmw would charge an arm and a leg to fix these stupid little things, id rather fuck up the car and sell it for parts than pay bmw

yeah im gonna go ahead and do it. i know i can, i just needed someone to point me in the right direction

so the issue with the car turning off has been reported on different forums as either being the ignition switch, crankshaft sensor, or MAF. not really sure which one of these would cause my car to just turn off. really weird issue

Get a Bently manual for it and some decent tools. For brake lines, figure out what size the hard lines are and get a snap-on line wrench in that size; nothing worse than rounding out the hardline fitting and having to bend and flair a whole new line. Do some research (the Bently manual is awesome) but don't mull around thinking about doing it. Get a general knowledge of how it should go and just jump in. Good luck user!

To just bleed the brakes get a Motive power bleeder, works great and you won't need someone else's help.

...

thank you, this is basically the support i needed. ive been researching the step by step instructions on how to do this all and i did download the bentley manual just for extra instructions.

the only thing im scared of, is that the brakes dont just need to be bled and need a new master cylinder because that would be fucked

those are the estimates from a bmw shop?

what a fucking joke

If the master cylinder needs to be done, you might want to enlist professional help or at least get someone who's done it before to be there and help you. It's relatively easy, but if you've never done one, there are plenty of ways to fuck it up. You don't need to take it to a specialist if you're going to hire a shop. Brakes all generally work the same way.

The prices are stupidly high on this. Did your car need all that done at once? Holy shit.

niga if the spic did a audio system job in your e39, then check the battery terminals, he probably hacked that shit up.

The thick red power wire runs along the right side of the floor, pull up some plastic panels and the rear bench to inspect the wiring.

Brakes are easy to replace, I did it myself. Any YouTube video will tell you.

My advice is to get the valve covers fixed quickly.

I have a 528i and am buying a 530i. So here's what I can tell you.

Cooling system will make or break your car. There's a fallacy that BMW's are unreliable. They're reliable cars if you don't let them fall into disrepair, after that, it can have a domino effect. I'm selling my 528i because it was my first car, and I overheated it once, which caused enough damage that it's not worth fixing with a full budget.

Vanos has been said to be sensitive. I never had problems with mine but it's still worth keeping an eye on.

Clean your fuel filter. I don't know what's going on with your car, but a fuel filter might be one cause for it turning off. The lights flickering makes me think otherwise, but it doesn't hurt to check.

Cooling system.

Air filter, keep it clean.

Use premium, the mpg gains will offset the cost a good amount, and it'll keep your engine clean.

Keep it clean.

If you have an engine light, take care of it. Don't let it sit.

I've read that VANOS doesn't affect anything if it isn't fixed

E39s are old and look dated now.

Should have just got something newer. I'm back in 1991 where 5 fishing boat sailors lost their lives in a perfect storm. Those were better times. They are better times.

The e39 has nothing significant about it. 1991 was a special year. I love you.

The e39 is one of the best look cars ever and a personal favorite so fuck off
