You have more in common than you think, commerce over centuries between christian countries tends create some ties and rather common values. Napoleon made sure modern enlightenment values also ended up being shared by most people accross the continent.

Of course there are still some differences, but there is more in common between a Pole and a Frenchman than between a 4th generation French muslim from Seine Saint Denis and a left bank parisian.
