It actually is a good story, though. It's a lot darker, and much more somber than Memories of Celceta.

Sorry, but after I got tricked by people claiming how great Celceta was I found it quite hard to trust any praise for the series anymore.

And the problem with Celceta story wasn't that it wasn't dark or whatever. It and its characters were just ridiculously bland and the writing was pretty poor as well. VIII would need to improve on those really greatly.

I can agree to this. I actually cared about the story a lot more this time and it made me take my time instead of just zooming past the story events. Also, Dana a best girl.

Don't. I haven't played VIII but the Ys series is not something I would recommend for its story, ever. It does just enough to get the action going and has enough narrative beats to, well, be a story at all. They are games you play for the action, though to be fair Celceta wasn't the best introduction to the series on that front. I actually would've advised against starting with that game, opting instead for either I&II Chronicles or Oath in Felghana.
