This game wasn't really made for the NA userbase, it was popularized and made into an esport by China. Even fucking look at the Warcraft movie, it flopped in NA, but China carried that shit and made more than 300million in their country alone from ticket sales.
LoL is literally dota gutted with a lot of parts of the game removed (denying, creep camp stacking/pulling, runes, abilities that work on allies/enemies (pudge vs blitzcrank), items that can counter abilities so you can play most heros and still have a balanced team)
The easier game more focus'd on "fun" will always have a bigger userbase. Look at Overwatch
