It's not about how many kills you get or how much damage you do but rather what you gain from it.

If you are playing a poor hero for the situation or only playing to farm meaningless damage then you aren't helping your team, you being like that actively prevents them from doing what they need to do. No one cares if you play junkrat and sit in the back spamming grenades into zarya shields all game, congrats you have gold damage and gold elims but your team could never actually move up because you never pushed and you charged the enemy zarya constantly.

Damage is not relevant if you're not killing, which can either be your own fault (gameplay or hero choice) or your team's. People can heal damage.

Elim doesn't mean shit if you trade 1:1 every engagement, get an triple elim on a ulti after your team was already dead or are getting 20 fire elims. A team with 6 dps or a 5 dps 1 healer will have someone with gold on one or both of those, does that means he deserves to win ? Elim also means nothing if you're not eliminating the key member of the other team because he is getting more job done than you, regardless if it's because he is good, your team is bad, your team don't know or don't want to pick the counter (and would be able to deal with the other members if you dealt with the one that is shitting on your team).
