So its mandatory for all characters or the vast majority of them and theres no reason not to take it if you can

there is no reason not to use fortify if you CAN use it. but how does this differ from say, faster attacks/casting, or any other actually useful gem?

if you needing to bind fortify to your main skills bothers you, then dont. put it in your movement one or use a 20-second vigilant strike

Hitting slower doesn't get me killed like not having damage reduction

Why is it so hard to add dodge/armor/ES/Evasion or things like next hit will do you half damage with 6 second cooldown

or you will are guaranteed to dodge the next attack

whenever you parry a hit you gain a charge that reduces the next 3 attack damage

Or gain 5% of the damage done to you as ES or life which means you get hit by 1k you gain 50 but if you block it you get free 100 if the % is off

Why not make melee weapons give defensive bonuses to give people more choices specially the ones that would be active at all times meaning you won't get instagib before you can land a hit and maybe stuff that doesn't force people to go fortify?

a bow build that clears 2 screens not only a SIGNIFICANT chance to die from reflect on red maps, because with that dps eating up 10% of your own damage is suicide, but "melee" merely means "uses skills that scale off melee weapons". not all melee builds need you to be in the face of monsters. Some even have better clearing than bow skills

getting blanket defenses as a reward for using a weapon type you'd use anyway is not the same as building with 2x curses for warlords and enfeeble, or sacrificing damage for 40fy, or losing attack frames to use a long duration vigilant strike, or losing damage to have fortify as a bow build.

most defense layers are AVAILABLE to anyone, but there are costs to them. managing the cost/benefit of defenses and offence is what arpgs are about

I'm just downloading this game for the first time now to join my friends. Is there a beginner friendly build or should I just go for it? I have played d2 and d3 previously.

atlas and essence look boring

all they did was adapt the jewel system to maps. the optimal way to use it will be figured out within a week and we'll all be back to doing the same grind again and again and again and again and again for another five years until they """"""revamp""""""" it again

essence league looks pretty boring. most HC players won't touch it because nobody trusts GGG's balancing anymore. i bet we'll have an entire tab full of useless essences by a week into the league

Atlas seems pretty rad imo as a mechanism to dole out and pace maps and the map upgrade / more maps should give you some more to run at a minimum.

Essence seems crazy strong for crafting but if you're a poor shit or self found its less attractive.

I wanna make a DW Reave build with a scepter as a stat-stick. They're so easy to get self-found early on, and later in the game I can use a doryani's catalyst for loads of damage.

So I recently started doing maps at level 68 (Tier 1-3 currently at 70) which is great and all, but occasionally I'm dying pretty quickly against mobs or bosses. What's the best way to figure out what went wrong?

Most of the time I'm not even able to look at the monster mods because things get too hectic, and even when I do, it doesn't give much insight (because it's not something obvious like damage reflect).

20% of most maps is just a gamble on whether I hit my panicked life flasks fast enough or just die. Usually I can clear them somehow but it feels like I'm doing something wrong.
