But your average person might show these changes given the right environmental stimuli, like being rich from birth. Our ability to be undestanding, sympathetic,empathetic, etc towards somebody depends on our personal identity. Because we can only really evaluate their emotions by projecting our own onto them in the long term, aside from the short-term of mirror neuron activity. Because we can stow our memories of that activity though, and access it through episodic memory, a richer person who is often around suffering can still be a kinder person. Again, it's pretty dependent on culture, though the culture as we known it produces and maintains assholes.
If you've ever suffered physiological effects of depression, and been talked down to by a guy who has never dealt with depression, that's exactly it. They don't have any experience with the physiological differences that affect your experience in such a ubiquitous manner. They simply are unable to project any meaningful kind of suffering that is similar to yours.
