What is Veeky Forums's opinion on Trans am's? Worth it or nah? Thinking about getting one but heard they are slow as fuck....

What year f@m?

Will dump some trans am porn I have

looking at the '79 model mostly, also heard the '81 is slow as shit

...

Dang can't really help you much then dude sorry. I'm the spic that drives the 79 z28 and the 84 firebird. What engine were u looking at? I don't think it was standardized chevy small blocks yet. I wanna say transam had like an Oldsmobile in it

The one im looking at has a 6.6 litre v8, but the odometer goes up too 100 mph and ive been reading that they are slow as fuck due to some laws passed in the late 70's

Btw im a newfag and im just gonna admit it now, still would appreciate the help and would wanna learn more about cars.

Well ill admit that I don't know shit about the 6.6 v8 which I guess turns out to be the Oldsmobile small block. Wiki says its rated for 185 horsepower and over 325 ft lbs of torque which is a fair amount of torque. Idk how much a 79 weighs but my 84 bird has a crappy 305 in it which makes 165 hp and I've gotten it to 130mph weighing 4000lBS completely stock. It's got a 700r4 tranny which is nice for cruising at higher speeds without redlining but sucks at acceleration from my experience.

My z28 has a built 350 in it that's got a mild cam, performance heads, pistons, rockers, corvette intake manifold and edelbrock carb. egr deleted and that other shit (forget what its called) deleted also and currently smog pump delted too (pulley broke yesterday so just re routed the belts) It's putting out over 420hp at the crank but idk how much torque. It's got a 3 speed 350 turbo hydro tranny and gets up and moving pretty dam fast and is loads of fun but has to rev high as fuck to get top end speed. Also have a high flow water pump, bigger radiator and a big ass solid fan to keep things cool.

Any of the older muscle and pinyin cars can be easily souped up though dude. Get headers and bigger exhaust pipe, delete smog and egr and all that and a light cam and tuning the carb will really wake it the fuck up

There's an Olds 403 and a pontiac 400, they're both labeled as 6.6. I think the poncho has maybe 10-20 more horses. Sweet cars, always wanted one.

Sound expensive and time consuming, am I better off just buying a different or more modern muscle car?

>ive been reading that they are slow as fuck due to some laws passed in the late 70's

They started reducing the amount of lead in gasoline in the 70's in the United States. Less lead meant lower anti-knock properties so many manufacturers began reducing the compression ratios of their engines to compensate for that. Lower compression ratios meant that the engines produced less horsepower. For example, a base model Corvette in 1970 came with a 350 engine that produced 300 HP. The 1971 model with the same 350 engine that had slightly lower compression ratio produced 270 HP. The 1975 model only produced 165 HP.

Had a 76 for a few years. Looked cool, but very slow, not good on gas. Mid 70s to mid, late 80s were not known for their speed in stock form. How high the speedometer goes does not tell you how fast the car is. Ford escort speedo shows 120 but no way in hell it's getting there unless it's going downhill with a tailwind.

Get the TA if you like how it looks and you can afford the gas. It's actually pretty comfy for cruising around in but do not buy it if you think it's going to be fast. A Honda fit will be faster.

They also started requiring catalytic converters somewhere in the mid-70's as well I think which had a negative impact on engine performance.

Well that depends on you man, I personally love the look of second gen f-f-bodies. I also got my z28 already modded out with a new engine new tranny new interior and new carpet for 5k. I just gotta paint the bitch and align some panels and I'm solid. How much is your trans am going for? Also, old American v8s are easy as fuck to work on, like literally Legos tier. It *may* be cheaper to buy and build and then simply maintain, than to splurge on a new moder. Muscle car for 5 figures.

About 28,500, it's not a definitive purchase, just a question if I buckle up and get it. I really love the looks of TA's but i wanted to know if they're worth it and if I would regret said purchase. Thanks alot though guys

28 grand? Holy fuck then no dude.

unless its a bandit trans am, youre taking it in the ass from some old geezer who thinks his shits gold.

I really like the 4th gens

LOL you're contemplating that much cash for a car that is slow as fuck and can't turn? Hey man I have some land in Florida I can sell you

maybe if you can talk him down to 2850 lel

All cars where slow in the mid to late 79s

Why do you show up in every muscle car thread (not complain btw)

he got a crappy old Camaro with an engine he didnt build and thinks that gives him some authority is my guess

I want some dynos cuz I dont think it makes 420hp

Honest answer? I work an insane amount of hours a week. I'm an active duty marine plus work weekends at autozone plus am in my junior year of college and also play foot ball in a rec league. Shit posting/reading Veeky Forums any second i get down time and working on my car/talking about my car is pretty much my only release. I don't watch TV or play video games. I've just fallen in love with old American v8s

I'm almost done with my bachelor's and haven't even touched my GI bill yet, strongly considering using that to pursue automotive school as a backup career if law enforcement doesn't pan out, or if anything just to learn more and be better at working my own car.

Firebirds are better Camaros that become equal to Camaros as the generations go on because GM told Pontiac to stop making better cars.

I don't think I'm an authority on shit I was just trying to be helpful man, but whatever. Like I said it's literally my only non work related activity currently because I'm busting my ass trying to save up for a house and finish my degree before I get out so I can get a federal Job.
