Whatever happened to the Jutes?
Whatever happened to the Jutes?
The Jutes in denmark become part of the danes
They assimilated with the others to form the English
formed the Kingdom of Kent until the Vikings when it disintegrated and the nobility joined the Kingdom of Wessex
did the Jutes speak a North or West Germanic language?
West
do we have records of it? i know Jutlandic is a North Germanic language, but was this what the Jutes spoke?
They sucked and were gay, and assimilated, just like the Frisians
There are records of the Kentish dialect, which is clearly West-Germanic.
Jutlandic is a dialect of Danish, who moved in after the Jutes left for Britain.
I'm just guessing but probably not too far from the old saxon and frisian
Formed kingdoms in Kent, Wight and on the Hampshire coast. Kent was the wealthiest and most cultured of the early English kingdoms.
barely a dialect though, unless you're talking about sonderjysk
They became the cutes :^) .
Anglo-Saxon just became a blanket term for all the migrating tribes.
In like in or two centuries after the migration no one could tell them apart anyways. In terms of genetics the continental Saxons and Frisians were the same, Frisian runes are practically identical to what the anglo-saxons used and their art; well judge it for yourself
*one or two centuries
agenbyte of inwit
Frisians didnt assimilate.
Friezen zijn om te kotsen. NEDERFRANKISCH VOLK WEERT U TEGEN DE ONGEWASSEN BARBAREN UIT DE ZEIKERIGEZEILBOOTJESPROVINCIE
Fryslan isn't the only place with Frisians.
Nedersaksen zijn nog altijd beter dan Nederfranken en Friezen.
Why aren't Anglo-Saxons considered Norse?
They occupied the same geographic region, spoke similar languages, and traded/raided England
Because both are already considered Germanic
Yeah but still
Like Picts and Gaels
Jutes aren't considered Norse either. Danes are Norse, it is believed they migrated to Jutland from Scania and Zealand. But mostly Danes are just considered Norse because of their massive influence on Scandinavia throughout history
Norse is basically synonymous with North Germanic (although sometimes it refers to only the West North Germanics, so Iceland, Faeroe, and Norwegian + Danish) excluding the Swedes and such. In truth it really just means North Germanic.
Anglo-Saxons are West Germanics, but the further back in time you go the more all these different sub-ethnicities meld into the common Germanic era and become more and more indistinguishable. For example, Old English used to have an understandable level of mutual intelligibility with Old Norse, and almost total mutual intelligibility with languages like Frisian, Frankish, and Old Saxon.
People from Kent and the Isle of Wight still call themselves Jutes. Nothing happened to them.
>Nedersaksen zijn nog altijd beter
Kan het beamen, woon zelf onder ze
i live on the isle of wight and nobody calls themself a jute
>tfw live in east anglia
>tfw basically a fenner
why is the east so bad, lads?
That's because the Wightish Jutes were genocided to a man by the Kingdom of Wessex.
Hoe bevalt mijn standaardtaal vriendjes.
T. Nederfrank
those weren't the same jutes
