I wish car manufacturers would start using something consistent. Just put a fucking screen in there and let us change it if we want to. You'd probably be able to sell new navigation units as upgrades over the lifetime of the car.

But nope, gotta integrate the touchscreen into the radio, the a/c system, it has to do everything! And it can't be updated ever, so have fun with your resistive touchscreen and outdated maps.

Potential Liability. Ford probably calculated the position of their driver airbag before putting in this device dock. If the passenger airbag went off, it would throw the device into the driver's face with all the speed that airbag could muster. Presumably Ford knows the driver airbag will block it and the device won't be flung into a rear passenger's face too.

That is my assumption anyways. Perhaps someone can go ask their Ford dealer what happens when the passenger side airbag throws the device?

What's with that big plastic trip piece sitting on top of the phone? Why not have it on a hinge so it flips back and the mounting bracket itself has a lower profile?

Because something at the front of the dashboard and standing tall is the right location for the passenger airbag to hit as it comes out. Due to the angle, the airbag explosion will throw the phone into the driver's face.

You can get a ticket for using mobile devices that have a data connection, while in a car on a public street.

So you can't use a phone for navigation, but you can use a dedicated gps device.

What's the point of that law anyways? Any and all interactive devices are distractions. If safety was an issue, a GPS wouldn't even work until the car came to a stop.
