Regarding sims 4: Which of the expansions are essential? Does this game ever go on sale? Whats the performance like compared to the slog that Sims 3 is? Is the adjustment from sims 3 to sims 4 harsh (most importantly removal of open world and modifying textures of anything on the fly)

That's what I was going for- industrial, but lived-in. It's a home away from home, basically, so the bedroom (and dining room) is full of photos of loved ones, and there's a holodeck for all your Blicbloc needs.
I gotta figure out the walls, though, Nothing Maxis-made really matches the "used future" look I'm going for, and everything I've found online doesn't match the game's style at all or is just impossible to build with (cough cough mimoto-sims.tumblr.com/)

I'd agree with that. There's plenty to do, but it's all so shallow (but that's sort of the design philosophy of EPs anyway). At least GPs are supposed to have some depth, but there's so few of them.
