Back with more theoretical class system crafting.

I really like how Thracia had a single basic Sword Fighter which has a promotion shared with the Axe Fighter (then called Mercenary, now we'd call it Hero). In this game sword fighter and axe fighter look very similar, as if they were just minor variations on a single class.

So I thought what if we did the same for other weapon combinations. Starting with melee weapons we have sword/lance and lance/axe, combinations most often associated with the Paladin and General respectively. Splitting up Cavalier into Sword and Lance Knights is simple enough, and Armor Knights have been all around the weapon triangle so having a Lance Armor and Axe Armor works fine.

With this we get a nice balance of weapons and variety of units (infantry, heavy infantry, and cavalry).

YOUUUUU ARE THE OCEANS MISTAKE

Some members of the Sword Fighter class instead promote to Swordmaster. Nowadays the player would be given the choice. Add an axe specialist, Berserker (or Warrior if you prefer), on the axe fighter side and we get a nice balance and gradation between speed and power.

Do the same for the cavalry and we can fit in some other common classes, the Bow Knight and Great Knight. This gives a nice gradation of light, medium, and heavy cavalry.

And this is where I get stuck. Nothing else really fits as a promotion for armor knights.

One option is combining all the knights into one line, in which case the Great Knight makes the most sense as the alternative for the Axe Armor. Though this would mean the axe armor ends up with the same weapons either way, which is weird.

And there's still the issue of the Lance Armor's alternative. A lance specialist, something like Sentinel might work, but it goes against the flow of progressively slower, sturdier units going down the chain. Peaking at one from the end feels so wrong, but then nothing's going to be sturdier than General.
