If you're not planning on getting anything for service uses then I would consider the 335d from BMW. you can pick one up semi high mileage 2011 with great options and luxury for around 11k. the car is RWD diesel so you get reliability and you get BMW handling because it's a BMW. also when you equate that diesel is normally 10 cents cheaper you get about 15% gain in MPG from the price too. so the gasoline equivalent would be 45-50ish highway. Also if not consider a Chevy cruise DI.

Other than that, the midsize class is pretty cutthroat. Test them all out. As much as I like Mazda, I wouldn't bother getting the 6 unless I had to have stick, which admittedly sucks in traffic that you will undoubtedly encounter.

No one else is getting 40+ mpg with a 2.5L at 180Hp. No one.
The hybrids arent even touching that power and barely breaking that mpg.
